Is that thing a thermal sight? And what should I be looking at as a period piece of technology. By which I mean, a 2000 era item envisioned in 1980 something.

I've decided to buck up the courage and post my alternate-timeline for the Twilight games I run. The premise is that WW3 started in 1986 rather than 1996 and my players began the campaighn in the summer of 1990 after everything had gone to hell.

Initialy I kept things to just Europe and sketched a rough timeline to cover events but after a few encouraging words from folks on this bord I decided to expand and create a full setting. I've decided to post my work here so other folks can have a look, maybe take some ideas or help me expand the setting fully.

The Timeline (roughly)

1979:
Some historians claim that WW3 really started in December of 1979, with the Russian invasion of Afghanistan.

1980:
Reagan is elected president, his hardline anti-communist stance would lead to some of the key events that resulted in the third world war.

Iraq takes advantage of Iran's growing geo-political isolation and instigate the Iran-Iraq war.

1981:
Failed assassination attempts on both President Reagan and the Pope.

The Russians begin the escalation of military efforts in Afghanistan. Both America and China support the Mujahideen.

Iran-Iraq war leads to a stalemate as Iranian human wave assaults blunt Iraqi offensive efforts combined with problems caused by a overextended Iraqi supply chain.

1982:
CIA agent, William Smith, begins his training/observation mission in Afghanistan

Israel begins conflict with Lebanon following attempted assassination of Ambassador Shlomo Argov and increased terrorist attacks by groups using lebanon as a base.

Falklands war results in a British victory. Military analysts on both sids of the iron curtain are forced to re-evaluate the capabilities of rapid reaction forces in light of the speed and effectiveness of the British respone to the the Argentine invasion.

The Iranians break the stalemate and begin offensive operations against the Iraqis.

Mujahideen recieve tanks and weapons from the Chinese and support from the Americans.

1983:
An Iraq-Soviet arms deal is undercut by the USA as the Reagan administration takes steps to limit Soviet influence in the Middle east. Rather than buying Soviet T72's, the Iraqis aquire 63 American M60's along with F4 Phantoms. The plan backfires as Soviets form an alliance of convenience with the Iranian government and supplies them with the tanks and equipment earmarked for Iraq and conveniantly opening up anothe possible front for the conflict in Afghanistan. The Iran-Iraq war turns into yet another proxy war between east and west.

America launches a succesful operation in Grenada, which is condemned by the USSR as "aggressive imperialism"

1984:
Margaret Thatcher follows Reagan's anti-communist stance which leads to tension between the UK and France as the French government pursues a conciliation policy between east and west.

William Smith is captured by the Soviets in Afghanistan and accused of espionage and gun smuggling, US authorities deny all knowledge and leave him "hanging in the wind". This events triggers a series of events that lead to the third world war as the Soviets take a much more hardline approach in Afghanistan and begin to see it as a conflict directly against the west (and China). Soviets make demands that America acknowledge and cease their involvement in the Afghan conflict, similar demands are made of the Chinese and the USSR begins a major mobilisation.

Reagan wins a second term, taking advantage of current events and promising an increasingly hardline, anti-communist stance.

1985:
William Smith is executed on carges of espionage while the US government continues to deny all knowledge. An unknown source leaks documents to the New York Times that prove Smith was indeed a CIA agent operating in Afghanistan, the scandal rocks the Reagan administration and locks them into an increasingly belligerent anti-communist policy.

Mikhail Gorbachev becomes leader of the Soviet Union and makes it clear that the Soviet Union will no longer tolerate acts of aggression against the USSR or her allies. Private documents discovered after the war indicate that Gorbachev had desires to reform the Soviet Union but was forced to change his goals in the face of external beligerance and internal pressure.

General Jiang Shihong of the PLA instigates operation Jade Phoenix an unauthorised offensive into the Soviet Union. Believing that the Soviets are weak and unready to respond and that China could benefit greatly from a dictated settlement, General Shihong gathered a like-minded coterie of senior officers and devised a plan in which a division under his command would go rogue and attack the USSR. Jade Phoenix was a simple strategy, Shihong expected rapid and deep gains that his allies would put pressure on Beijing to follow up and develop. General Shihong greatly underestimated the Soviets and his attack iwas rapidly crushed by Red Army reserves positioned for just such a possibility, his last communication to headquarters is loosely translated as "Better to ask forgiveness than to beg permission.". The Red Army then counter attacks and punches into Chin with the force of a thunderbolt despite the Chinese government's repeated attempts to disavow General Shihong's attack. When the Red Army deployed chemical weapons, any hopes of peaceful compromise where shattered.
It becomes the Soviet's turn to indulge in underestimation asthe PLA surpass the expectations of all observers ad mobilise reserves to blunt the Red Army and rapidly create a meatgrinder across the front.

Soviet planners decide that the Iran-Iraq war could be useful if Iran could win and secure a puppet regime in Iraq, opening the Iraqi oil reserves to Soviet Exploitation. TheSoviets change the nature of the Iran-Iraq war by mobilising the Transcaucasus front and sending it into Iran to support ther allies against the Iraqis. Mobilisation orders are sent to all Warsaw Pact countries, notifying them that troops wil be needed for mobilisation against the PLA and for possible reinforcement of the Transcaucasus front.
Britain and France quickly respond to protect their Middle East assets and deploy troops. Britain sends two Ghurka battalions, a para battalion and an infantry battalion while France sends the Foreighn Legion operational group. America deploys the 7th special forces group and a ranger battalion.
These forces are deployed around the middle east, however the west is not yet ready to involve itself in the Iran Iraq war directly.

The Iraqis know that without a quick end to the war, the Soviets could crush them before the west intervenes and launches a massive attack into northern Iran.

The West German government recieves a surprise, highly secret delegation from the East German military command. Not wishing to be dragged into conflict in China, the East Germans begin to negotiate a possible reunification.

1986:
The Soviet union undertakes full mobilisation to break the stalemate against China, by mid-year almost all category B divisions are sent to the far east, catergory C divisions are upgraded to B status and mobilisation-only units begin training.

German army formations cross the border and quickly overwhelm Soviet forces with the support of East German units. Reunification is declared and a pre-emptive invasion of Poland is launched. The whole world is taken by surprise at these actions, however by November the Warsaw pact forces in eastern europe are able to regroup and launch punishing counter-attacks forcing the Germans to request NATO assistance. NATO forces in Germany deploy in December and world war three officaly begins.

In the middle east Israel takes pre-emtive masures against Syria to prevent that long-term, pro-Soviet nation taking advantage of Soviet involvement in Iran. The campaighn rapidly becomes bogged down in a stalemate.

The 1st Transcaucasus front comes under the command of General Suryakin who has orders to secure the Persian Gulf, he moves his forces into Northern Iran to meet the Iraqis.

The situation in Germany takes everyone by surprise. America had been reinforcing it'scommitments in Saudi Arabia since the beginning of the year but scales up deployments.

From this point I pretty much use the printed background as it rather folds seamlessly together once hostilities have begun.

It’s nearly 20 years since I ran any part of the Escape from Kalisz scenario and I’m now wondering if I made some tweaks to the units present when I ran it all that time ago (I certainly didn’t have the NATO vehicle guide at the time).

Essentially I’ve been re-reading the Escape from Kalisz scenario that comes with the v1.0 box set (well technically quickly scan reading it at the moment) and I was wondering if there were any non US troops on the NATO side who were serving with/alongside the 5th ID during the Battle of Kalisz? I don’t mean just individual guides or translators or stragglers who have been incorporated into American units – I’m mean actual units, probably of British, German or Canadian origin.

When I ran the scenario previously my PCs were a mix of Americans and British but I’m now wondering whether I had stretched things in allowing a number of British characters.

Also if there were non US units at the Battle of Kalisz does anyone have details of them?

Thanks,

Something Web posted in another thread got me thinking again about what civilian law enforcement would look like in the Twilight World, especially here in the States.

I wonder what the average quality of civilian law enforcement organizations would be like in the later years of the war (after the TDM, in particular). In the U.S., I wonder what proportion of law enforcement officers are reservists or National Guard. In the event of WWIII, most of those men and women who are would be called up to active duty. In addition to recalled reservists and activated guardsmen, a lot of younger, patriotic officers, deputies, patrolmen, etc. would likely voluntarily enlist (I don't know if/how the draft would apply to folks in law enforcement). In other words, the creme-de-la-creme would be skimmed off by the armed forces. Who would be left behind?

Furthermore, attrition in large cities, especially ones hit by nukes, would be high for law enforcement and other first responders. As MilGov and CivGov snipe at each other, and organized militia groups like New America step up their violent activities, this attrition would only increase. Just dealing with looters and street gangs would take its toll. Add all of these factors up, and what are you left with? Worst case scenario is that law enforcement in the U.S. c.2000 would be the dregs of its pre-war self. In some spots, orgnanized local government law enforcement might be altogether absent. In others, what serves as law enforcement might be just as bad as the local criminal elements (if not worse).

Currently, here in S. Arizona, a couple of county sheriffs are only a few steps removed from fledgling marauder bosses. Sherriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County (made famous by making county inmates wear pink undies and jumpsuits) is being investigated by the Justice Department for various Civil Rights Law infringements/violations. In some ways, he's only a few short steps removed from a feudal lord. I can only imagine what he'd do if the Feds were distracted by a world war. Just recently, conservative Republlican Sherriff Paul Babeau of Pinal County gave up his run for senate when a illegal immigrant male lover reported that Babeau threatened to have him deported if he left him or told anyone about the affair.

This is a pretty pesimistic projection, I know, but it doesn't seem too far fetched to imagine some parts of the country starting to look like one of the sets from Mad Max.

What do you think?

Allot of new tv shows coming out, pilots and stuff. These 2 have T2K potential. Info from Grantland.

On ABC
PERPLEXING: Last Resort, from cable capo Shawn Ryan (The Shield, Terriers), is the ballsiest rookie on anyone’s schedule. Starring Andre Braugher as a guy who speaks sternly, it’s a high-concept, higher-budget serial about the crew of a rogue nuclear sub who set up a new, deterrent-dangling nation on An Island That Conveniently Looks Like Hawaii. It’s got great credentials, a great cast, and is exactly the sort of all-or-nothing gambit the network drama departments should be trying before sliding into complete procedural irrelevance. So why has Lee beached this thing on Thursdays at 8 p.m.? It’s either savvy counter-programming to CBS and NBC’s sitcoms or a high-stakes game of brinksmanship. One way or another, somebody’s getting blown up.

On NBC
INTRIGUING: Speaking of polar bears, J.J. Abrams has bestowed the Peacock with another big-ticket idea from his brain freezer. Revolution picks up the story of Earth 15 years after all the power went out: The U.S. government has fallen into rebel factions, horses are under more strain than they were on the set of Luck, and people growing food in their backyards in Brooklyn are essential instead of annoying. Despite a recent graveyard of serialized sci-fi stinkers, I think our still-powered world is ready for another mutual obsession, and a little more Giancarlo Esposito is always a good thing. But the biggest red flag here is the sword-and-crossbow-wielding cast, a worryingly white collection of jutting jaws and bland good looks. Total societal breakdown? These pretties would barely survive a Patagonia catalog photo shoot.

Its probably been said before elsewhere, but a tv show i loved was Falling Skies. Not sure if there will be a series 2. But the first series was great. Better than Walking Dead as far as post-apoc goes.

This is something I do not remember anyone discussing.

Right now, you can not purchase the anti-biotic Tetracycline. There are several versions of WHY this is....

1) Recall by manufactorer
2) Lack of raw materials
3) Cost of drug vs income

This is not the only drug currently unavailable.

So this leads to my questions:

OT:
1) What, if anything, have you done to prepare for catastrophe as far as prescription drugs you or a loved one needs? My wife is an insulin using Type II diabetic. There are oral medications that can help, and yes, I have about a 60 day supply on hand if things go BANG. She also has many strange and interesting allergies. Tetracycline is one of the very few anti biotics she can use.

2) What, if anything, have YOU heard about these shortages and the whys and wherefores?

GAME:

1) Have you played the shortage of drugs in your games?

2) What was the result?

Concerns with Mexico Data

Not to start a riot but...

Is it me or does most of the data about Mexico imply a MUCH weaker military then they should have had coming into the invasion?

Also, no navy/airforce/marines data is available that I found.

Version 1.0 Setting Background

I’m in the process of setting up a new face to face T2k campaign and I’m considering using the original version 1.0 setting background (the one which starts in 1995) rather than the version 2.2 setting that incorporates the collapse of the Soviet Union. My question is therefore whether anyone has had a go at filling in the v1.0 background for the years 1985 to 1994 to work out which real events fit in this timeline and, more importantly, which don’t.

The most obvious events (off the top of my head) that won’t have occurred are:
-	the collapse of the Soviet Union and other communist regimes
-	the re-unification of Germany
-	the end of the Cold War
-	the reduction in the size of the British Army

I’m sure that there will be more than this so I was wondering if anyone had thought about this already and had written something up on it?

Thanks for any constructive thoughts and comments.

To anyone who ran/played Airlords of the Ozarks

Did anyone who ran/played this mod do it that way? Did anyone come up with some other ideas?

While I liked that T2k modules usually had lots of leeway for GMs to make up their own stuff, a map of the airship parking area would have been really useful here.

As I'm sure I've said elsewhere, I'm likely to run a 1918 version of this somewhere in eastern Europe, or Siberia, or the Caucasus. Hmm, I just had a thought, a 1918 version in the Ozarks would be fascinating.... Or a Prohibition-era one, with New American racist/fascists funded by aerial rumrunning?

Recent events have demanded that the board moderators move to take action in order to restore and preserve the atmosphere of civility and constructive dialogue that we strive to maintain here on this forum. This action is based on multiple complaints that we have received from multiple users over the past 60 days. Public and private warnings to the parties in question have been issued and ignored. Therefore, more stringent action was called for. This decision has been a lengthy, diffilcult, and unpleasant one for us to make, and this action has not been taken lightly.

After much consideration and deliberation, myself, Webstral, and Headquarters have decided to take the following administrative actions:

Targan's moderator privileges have been suspended for 30 days, effective immediately. He will still be allowed to open new threads and/or participate in forum discussions just like any user, but his moderator powers have been revoked for a thirty day period. Any violations of forum guidelines during this suspension will result in a full temporary ban.

Olefin has been banned from ALL forum activities for a 30-day period, effective immediately. This includes but is not limited to starting new threads, responding to existing threads, and/or sending unsolicited PMs. As long as Olefin remains in compliance with the terms of this ban for the full 30-day period, he will be allowed to continue viewing threads in the forum. At the end of this 30-day period, the ban will be lifted and Olefin will be permitted to resume full participation in all forum activities as long as he abides by all forum guidelines. However, any subsequent violations of forum guidelines may result in an extended temporary ban or full lifetime ban.

Any violations of this temporary ban will result in a lifetime ban. ANY attempts to circumvent this ban, including but not limted to reregistering under a pseudonym or using another user's account to post in the forum, will result in a lifetime ban from this forum and/or its future itterations.

Legbreaker has been issued an official public warning regarding his recent forum behavior. Any subsequent violations of forum guidelines will result in a 60-day, temporary ban.

At the end of this 30-day period, this public notice will be deleted from the forum.

If you have questions or concerns about these actions, please don't hesitate to PM me. However, please understand that these decisions are final.
