I started reading the book today, and just the introduction has some good adventure seeds, like recovering the Liberty Bell from its hideaway in the Appalachians.
There's also an interesting 2004 article in
The Atlantic that opens up the potential for a modified alt-history. It goes into the Reagan-era executive order setting up an alternate succession plan. With three teams set up to potentially take control, it provides a way for the CivGov/MilGov split to occur if two teams try to simultaneously exercise command.
