Default US Nuclear Powered Subs

Targan 11-10-2005, 11:29 PM I suppose the answers to the following questions might be restricted information, but does anyone know how many nuclear reactor techs are required to safely operate a Los Angeles or Sea Wolf class submarine? What sort of specialists are required to run the steam turbine systems? How do the roles of officers and enlisted men differ in terms of crewing a sub's power plant? Could a civilian reactor tech with experience in operating nuclear power stations, breeder reactors or nuclear medicine synthesis plants be easily retrained to operate an SW6 reactor? I am starting to gear up for the Last Sub modules and I have realised I really know very little about nuclear submarines.

DeaconR 11-11-2005, 07:41 AM Targan I strongly recommend that you get Tom Clancy's book "Submarine" which will be a good comprehensive guide to this. It has information on both British and American nuclear subs, something of the training, layouts of the boats, descriptions of engineering, weapon systems and quarters.

Unfortunately I lent it to someone and can't quote much of it for you off the top of my head. I believe he also wrote another book on submarine tactics too.

BTW...you're going to let your players have access to the sub? *shudders*

Enforcer 11-11-2005, 12:55 PM Targan, if you want that kind of stuff, don't use an insurance salesman's books to find out about subs (sorry DeaconR), use a book written by someone who was a submariner, like Michael DiMecurio. He was an officer aboard submarines, and he has a book about subs called "The Complete Idiots Guide to Submarines". Also as an extra thing, he has in the front of most of his books something that most uf us need, cutaway floorplans. (something I use to my advantage against my pc's)

Targan 11-13-2005, 11:46 PM Thanks for your tips DeaconR and Enforcer. The party in my campaign are likely to be tasked with finding the sub, partly because Po is currently the military's "can do man" and partly because he has a number of SEALs and submariners under his command. And the new PC, Lt Commander HD Black, is both.

Enforcer 11-14-2005, 10:20 PM Just don't give players access to a Seawolf class or Virginia Class, both SSN's are powerful (I am partial to the Seawolf, as it is fast AND real quite, and able to carry 50 weapons [read: torps or somesuch]). What kind of subs are we talking about, American? British? French? or Russian?

DeaconR 11-14-2005, 10:36 PM The sub in "Last Submarine" is a Los Angeles Class, The City of Corpus Christi.

Hey don't forget Canadian! We might only have 3 really old British diesel electrics but US carrier task forces could never get em during exercises. They would have been deadly if it were the real thing.

(Something a nuclear sub country's leaders refuses to accept is the value of a diesel electric).

Targan 11-15-2005, 05:12 AM And what about Collin and his mates, the Australian submarines, chugging out diesel smoke while the crew says "shush, be weally weally quiet".

Enforcer 11-15-2005, 02:05 PM According to what I have read, the Norwegians and Germans make some of the best and most modern diesel/electric subs in the world, with the best safety record. A most important thing, if you like living, lol.
