Saw a photo or two while I was researching. I know about 15-20 years ago Nottinghamshire Army Cadet Force targeted Sikhs for recruiting.

This would clear the way for the younger Royals and increase support for the monarchy. If you wanted to go into it, I'd have QE2 dropping dead during a visit to a hospital or refugee camp, perhaps during a speech about everyone being in it together and the need for sacrifice to make Britain great again.
I think that Her Majesty would share the dangers of nuclear destruction with her subjects of the city of London--shoring up morale while she lived, and serving as a rallying-point for the survivors knowing she gave her life doing her job in place. The Queen is dead! God Bless the Queen!

I fully agree that this is the most likely scenario but I want to stick to canon. I might well have her doing the Queen Mother role in the same way, basically coming out of retirement to serve her people.

When I was still running a campaign many years ago, I had the Queen and Prince Philip dead (nuked), Charles as the King, Diana running an unconventional home guard unit (with the help of some SAS troops, and her sons with her, mostly at home base but weapon qualified. (My mother killed her a German at the age of four, so I figure that's possible.) Andrew is in the Middle East flying helicopters. Margaret is a refugee in Germany, trying to get a cross-Channel trip; no one cares about her royal heritage, and she doesn't press it.
