Default I got two NPCs

I always ran T2k, never really played. These are from a long time ago, so I don't remember much. Since my players were much less military-interested than me back then, I usually stuck an NCO in as an NPC, to provide tactical advice when necessary ("Are you *sure* you want to do that, sir?")

1) Otto- He was a West German cavalry scout, small in stature, high in time served. Pre-war draftee, with a home in Hannover and a small family back there. He wore the standard grab-bag of uniform bits, shot a G3, and wore a blond mustache. He sticks in my head the most, since the players developed enough affection for him that they announced one of their goals was to get him out of Poland and back to his family. Given that we were deep in our hack'n'slash days, this meant a lot.

2) Ernie- a PC played by my brother. Again, this was back in our hack'n'slash days, so our idea of characters was to pile on odd details to make color. Ernie was a Dutch tank crewman, short and thin. He was definitely of the wacky humor, with a small rubber ducky added to his dogtag chain. He drove the M1 I gave the crew (note I didn't give them main-gun ammo, I wasn't that generous), and used an HK-CAW when out of it. The quack of the rubber duck was his usual response to questions aimed at him-- one quack for yes, two for no. Rather like Harpo Marx, without the curly hair.

favorite pc as in our own PCs? Or PCs that we've run across while playing/GMing?

If it's PCs that we've run across while playing/GMing, then I would nominate the English lord/SAS/French Foreign Legion 2REP PC who also worked with USMC scout snipers and Israeli Sayaret Matkal. Gear included a Desert Eagle, M40 sniper rifle and a tricked out M151 jeep with side mounted M134. If I recall, there was someone else on this board who ran across this fella...

My favorite PC is the one I was running in Raelus' pbp game, Dave Stoner.

Dave is a Navy SEAL corpsman. Average height & weight, with a swimmer's build. An E-5 (brain's frazzled just got home after a long day at work), can't remember if it's HM2 or HM3...

Dave grew up in California, a real beach bum. Surfing, swimming, kayaking, lifeguard on the beach, anything near the water with excitement was his calling. Joined the Navy, went to corpsman school, and finally made the Teams.

He's a smart ass at times, with an I-just-don't-give-a-damn attitude that borders on suicidal. His prefered weapon is an assault rifle/grenade launcher combo, but more often he ends up manning one of the party's machineguns. I've always pictured him as loaded down with so much crap he can barely move- on short patrols he'd carry his medic aid bag, AK-74 with grenade launcher slung on his back, and a MAG with just the loaded belt.

When he joined the game it was as a rescued prisoner, or maybe his capturers finally had enough of his mouth and wanted to get rid of him.

What's funny is the name Stoner is my wife's maiden name. An uncle of hers tracked her down after I got into the game, and it turns out he was a SEAL in the Vietnam era.

Hmm, Stoner huh? Where've ya been!? I'm currently having to run him as a second character to my own Major Anneka Soleblume.
Not too hard to do at the moment since the pair are in seperate locations, but could get difficult later. (Anneka has a secret crush on Stoner, an enlisted man, and doesn't know how he feels about her)

You're welcome back anytime, Wes. The game's not quite the same without you. Leg and I have been taking turns playing Stoner and, although we do our best, we just can't capture his personality.

That's why I had to drop out for a while, life is just too complicated right now to capture that Stoner personality. I want to get back into it, but I don't feel I can give the game, and Stoner, the attention they deserve.

I have played t2k only twice. Both times had a great time...good GM always helps the cause...

Since I do not have any military background other than reading, my characters have been privates assigned to rear echelon type of units.

Did not have much in the way of fancy gear or anything else. Pretty much standard issue gear.

I did bring some knowledge...I read up on moonshining... and had a character who was "senior tech" of the unit's alcohol still. I knew how to brew methanol to keep our 2 1/2 ton truck running...and knew how to brew ethanol for drinking and trading...we kept ALIVE duing one BAD winter storm because I had brewed enough ethanol to trade with the locals for sufficient food and shelter..Yeah we lived in a barn, but hey, better than out THERE in the cold and the wind and the snow and the sleet and the freezing rain...I DID say it was a BAD winter storm....

I dealt with that super dooper recon, sniper, delta, mossaad, SAS, Royal Marine Comando packing the Desert Eagle, but he had upgraded to a Barret Light .50 and a Thompson submachinegun too! Oh, and he made himself a Lord as well.

As for my favorite character;

"Gibson" he has been a PC I played in a short lived campaign. And a regular NPC in three games at least.

He is an older soldier, a Pvt. 3rd award, his uniform is torn, faded and shows several repairs. He has a helmet somewhere, but he normaly wears a soft cover. He generaly wears a fieldjacket and a pistol belt with a M3 fighting knife, a canteen and battle dresssing. He stuff magazines, grenades and cigarettes in his jacket pockets.

He normaly carries......<wait for it.....>

<wait>

An M3 Greasegun! They were still issued to mech crews in the early stages of the Twilight War. He has half a dozen of them taped in pairs.

He is salty, he is rude sometimes crude, really he just doesn't care. He is very insubordinate at times. He almost always has a cigarette burning, and at night its chaw. And he hates the Russians he calls all of the badies Russians or just plain commies. He also thinks handgrenades make one heck of a door bell.

Alas, and he doesn't know it yet, he died in 2002 or 2003 as he was hunting a sniper. But his character in 2000 doesn't know it yet.

I regret to report Dave 'Bones' Stoner has kicked the bucket.

It was a heroic death - he dived into the back of a burning truck to save several crates of mortar bombs (and the mortar) from blowing and showering the area and the rest of the unit with shrapnel. Unfortunately the flames had already done the damage and as he turned to toss the first crate over the side, BOOM!

It's unknown if it was the blast, shrapnel or the broken neck received on hitting the bitumen which did it - an autopsy will be carried out later.

He leaves behind virtually nobody but will still be sadly missed...

Default lest we forget

to those who have had to face the ultimate eraser and be stricken of the character sheet -a toast - lest we forget .

Our group will be convening for the first of our FtF in 2010 on thursday .

I have to wonder how many of our party PCs will be in the Pencil and paper heavens with Stoner after this one..

One of my many favourite PCs of all time was from our no in hiatus WWII campaign : gefreiter Steinkopf -
a German lowlevel NCO or private ,depending on what is antics and schemes had gotten him demoted to at the time.

A good MG man , and deeply skilled im surviving atrocious combat ,he nevertheless managed to get himself decorated and promoted after each session of combat ,only to be demoted after each session of barracks duty ,where is ridiculous black market schemes and unsavoury practices in teh BierStube and Offiziers Bordell ( where he really had no business being ) always landed him in the stockade and conveniently gave der GM a reason to send him on suicide missons -along with a grudgingly swearing under their breath party of unwilling cohorts that he got implicatdd -the rest of the party .

Steinkopf was big and strong ,but none to bright and his player artfully enacted this for teh rest of us .( It might have been natural for him ) .

Stature : Big frame ,strong ,brutal face with half ear missing from biting in fight
Gear : usually MG-34 or VZ 26 and Kar 98 bayonet.Captured TT-33 pistol
often with long wool over coat to hide stolen goods in satchels under arms .
Personality : raw laughter .twinkle in eye always invariably meant something ill advised would be attempted.Sudden violence possible.Practical joker-sometimes jokes would pose danger to life and limb .Restricted access to handgrenades by other PC ( squad leader ) .

Shot dead by firing squad after having tried insubordination, deserted his post in combat ,mutiny, theft ,collaboration and killing a superior officer and 2 MPs sent to apprehend him .

(The list was just the last session he was in play -not his whole career of say 10 sessions or so .)

My favorite PC was played by the girlfriend of one of my friends before I went on active duty in the Army. Her character was a doctor, and a damn good one -- but when combat, she went psychopathic (the PC, not the player). Her PC carried an Uzi, but not much ammo. That's because her favorite weapon was the axe from the pioneer tools on the M-113 -- she'd work her way behind the enemy and get some meat. Then, inevitably, after the fight was over, she'd come out, covered with blood, grin, and yell, "I love this shit!" (Again, the PC, not the player.) Just to top it all off, she named her PC "Angelina." Of course, we called her PC "The Angel of Death." Gave us oodles of fun.

While this is'nt a character I made I like him and think he would a good PC or NPC I added some details

Burt Gummer

Burt has a strange affection with guns since middle-school, he converted his BB gun to automatic by the eight-grade. he undertook the NFA process to purchase completely legal transferable title II weapons. Which include an array of sub-machine guns and even a minigun. Burt is paranoid about surviving World-War III, and he considered himself a survivalist. He spent years preparing incase it would happen sooner or later. Burt claims to have served in the military but says that most of his work is still classifed. He currently lives in a small remote cabin in Iowa, which is surounded by booby traps, he has a still and make fuel for armoured pick up which he bulit

Two of my Favorite PCs

Sir Tristan and his Noble Squire

Sir Tristan (David Ryan)
David Ryan was a child prodigy; he attended Princeton University at the age of 13 after graduating from high school. Ryan published his first mathematical paper at the age of 14 and graduated at the age of 16. During his graduate studies, Ryan was introduced to fantasy live action role-playing (LARP). Over next several years; while working for NASA; Ryan slowly morphed into an obsessed fantasy LARP gamer; who was unable to distinguish fantasy from reality. On August 13, 1997 Ryan (now calling himself Sir Tristan) was committed the Green Valley Psychic Hospital, for treatment of Schizophrenia. In aftermath of US nuclear attacks Sir Tristan “escaped” and embarked on his “Quest” to find the “Royal Chalice of the Elf King”.

Squire John
Squire John is a homeless person, who was place in Green Valley Psychic Hospital; for observation; shortly before Thanksgiving Day attack. In aftermath of the attack he and Sir Tristan (David Ryan) “escaped” from the hospital. Soon afterwards he began to call himself Squire John and subsequently became Sir Tristan’s (David Ryan) squire.

I'm currently in the process of creating a replacement for Stoner. He's Norwegian, STR 8, CHA 1, armed with an M82A1, wears a beard and long hair under his kevlar helmet (tempted to glue on horns).
First name - Thor. Guess what he calls his Barret?

50 % of professional soldiers from Norway use a horrible connoction called SNUS.
Its basically what Yankees call scruff - i.e powdered tobacco that is juicy and smelly .
A lump is baked with the index and thumb from the can ( size of a -well a scruf box ), and then this lump called a "prize" is wedged between upper lip and gum .It lasts about 1 hour depending on size. But many leave it in until it has smouldered to nothing almost .

A tell tale sign of troops using snus in teh area are little stinky lumps discarded next to foxholes etc

Years of using this leaves its mark -bad breath is one thing ,but also the lip is altered and portrudes up to 1 full inch in bad cases -permanently .It will probably regress to near natural state as abstinence is observed over a long time .

Swedish snus is the best .It is called general -Golden top.

It is notoriously hard to give up due to high levels of nicotine addiction .

Lack of snus can turn a good soldier grumpy and an average one into insubordination .

In many cases the troopes who use it can actually eat with it in place ,sleep with it and most certainly shoot with it .I suppose it is tactically superior tobacco when compared to smokes.

Coffee mug and snus is a connoiseur delight .

Swallowing a lump causes nausea and rapid heart rate etc .

Oopsie. But that sounds like something he would do. I knew his attitude would lead to bad things.

Taking out that tank single handedly was one of best RPG events I've done.
