Question Driving a BTR

Anyone know what kind of a transmission the BTR-70 has? Automatic or manual? If it's manual, how is shifting accomplished?

Standard steering wheel or yoke?

Push button or turn-the-key ignition?

Anything else I should know about?

No, I didn't just buy a BTR. The closest I'll ever get to the real think is T2K! I have a PC in a PbP game who's just been assigned to drive a recently captured BTR and I have no idea how one would do that. I'd like my IC driving posts to be as realistic as possible. Just tryin' to keep it real, ya know what ah mean?

Thanks.

They have steering wheels, that I remeber concretely.

as for ignition, be unique and give it a hotwire job maybe a screwdriver, or a toggle switch hanging from some wires that has been taped together. Or, even two pieces of wire that have a male/female clip, that way you can get around any realistic technical issues.

These are a BTR-80, but I believe the two vehicles are essentially the same (at least as far as general layout and controls).

Thanks guys.

I don't see a stick shifter in any of the pics. How do you suppose one would change gears?

Apparently one engine drives the first and third axels and the other drives the second and fourth - if one engine is out of action, the vehicle can still move albeit a bit slower than normal.
No idea how the transmission works.

How to start a BTR

(1) Two men get out, insert the hand crank and turn until engine turns over.

(2) Driver beats gear shift with hammer until first gear engages.
