While not a natural poison, a subtle and effective poison is antifreeze--it causes kidney failure, and is especially attractive to dogs and cats because of its sweet flavor.
For a truly nasty lingering painful death, overdose the victim with Tylenol/acetaminophen; they will briefly recover, then die by inches from liver failure. This should be reserved for the KGB torturer who got to your best buds.

This bit of trivia popped back up from high school chemistry while I was contemplating alternative methods of refrigeration. Old (very old) models of refrigerators used sulfur dioxide as a refrigerant. Which is all well and good as long as it stays in its sealed loop and, like Gremlins, _never_ comes in contact with water.
Otherwise--instant sulfuric acid. Not pleasant against the skin, and even less pleasant to breathe when aerosolized.

And of course if you burn Freon you get Phosgene, also bloody horrible toxic stuff.
