I was channel surfing the other day and caugh a bit of The Colony reality TV show on Discovery Channel.

Interesting show, the premise is that some type of holocaust strikes and 10 random people have to try and survive in a "ruined" city. (really an industrial part of Los Angeles).

The part that I saw had the survivors find shelter in a warehouse, clear it out of debris and make it habitable and secure from other survivors, then go out and find food and encounter other survivors (actors). they make a point to mention that in a disaster when resources are scarce, not everyone will be friendly.

they also scavenge parts from a pressure washer to create a generator, create fuel by making a wood gasifier. Then they use the generator to charge some car batteries.

previews of future episodes show some type of conflict with other survivors over the shelter. The premise is interesting, but I dont think there is any voting off of anyone. A couple of the survivors struck me as whiny or cranky, but that could be because they hadn't slept for 48hrs.

I caught part of it also, I think it might have been a minimarathon yesterday. Interesting concept. One of the engineers was a total dick, he designed & built the electric supply. A bank of car batteries hooked up to 2 car alternators on a powerwasher engine, fueled by wood gas. Every time someone wanted to use a power toll, this guy had a hissy fit. "You're going to use up all the power!". Why generate power if you're not going to use it? Okay, end of rant, sorry.

I saw it a couple weeks ago, and portions of the marathon yesterday, they have had about four episodes, they have a NEW episode tonight. This is where they have the conflict with people who claim the area as theirs, possibly the previous occupants.

As for the engineer who is a "dick" he isn't an engineer, he is a handyman, and I would have beaten his a$$ after a couple days. I would also have put that nurse girlie to work instead of her just making dinner beain all cutesy. And that martial arts girlie, she would have changed her attituide or she can live outside! Now get to work training everying in some basic holds and breakaways!

And what is it, them waiting until they having two days of water left before they resuply, you can lay siege to em and they would be done!

And why did they wait so long to work on defenses? A staff, a homemade PR-24, spears and pikes, a couple crossbows, as well as rocks to toss down on attackers from above and maybe a net, some punji sticks, or a rope or chain across the road for when the bike gang comes hauling down the street!

And trading away the jackhammer! I would have broken up some of the thinner concrete and gotten buisy at planting gardens.

Those are some of the things I noticed.

I haven't seen the show... but seen the commericials for it and keep thinking that they really could have a good show if they had put someone in there who knew what they where doing.

the first thing you do after getting shelter is getting it defendable, and part of that is making sure you have enough stored food and water held back in strategic reserve just incase you do get laid siege and can't get out for resupply. then you set up a place to grow food, and the last thing you do is make it comfortable.

I was watching one of the commericals and was thinking that they could have set up a drinkable water pyramid that would allow them to capture rainwater, and turn saltwater into something they can drink with the use of condensation. I remember watching some of the first Survivor and wondered why they didn't do that when they where on that island.

but the show gives me an idea for an game i would like to run if i can get out of here for a gamer convention in november... getting a table of players together and having them converting a locale into a self-supporting 'fortress' in a post-apoc setting.

You're quick on the draw, BGD. I was just going to post something about this show. I saw commercials for it last night and caught a few minutes of a rerun episode. It looked interesting. I bet you could get a lot of interesting scrounging and jerry-rigging ideas from it. Besides a T2K application, methinks the show could provide some inspiration/ideas for a Morrow Project (or any post-apoc) game as well.

I guess I thought there were too many skilled individuals - I mean how many engineers are in that house ?

Where are all the lawyers,CPAs,Fastfood-vendors and truck drivers ?

If we really want to get into it -why arent there any guns ?

(apart from the fact that they do not want itto turn into a gun-nut survivalist special).

(speaking of which - I guess I might be one ..;) )

Go to the Discovery Channel website and if you have high speed you can watch the episodes online that's what I did with the first episode.

As for water and guns,

It is LOS ANGELES. I know the area they are in, I worked it a couple years ago. It is EAST L.A., the river you see is the DEEP PART! <And yes it is THAT EAST L.A.> Sea water, well, the ocean is a good dozen or more miles away, and I honestly don't see them hauling their little cart through downtown L.A. to the beach and back. It would be funny to see the cast try it, the whinning and crying that would emit forth, but also seeing them trying to negotiate the congestion of L.A. and then some not so nice neighborhoods.

As for guns, well it is Los Angeles, they now are having people show ID for ammo purchases and firearms sheesh! Forget it!

Puts up the Spoiler tag just in case. I don't want to ruin anything for anyone.

****Spoiler****

Speaking of guns, What about that Trader. Did the Russians invade? :D They should have taken the truck. :D If the situation was real, I think the group would have been asking about other survivors, what is going on out there. Plus, they would be asking where they can get some guns too.

Oh good point!

Or how often do they come around or who they deal with. Then again had they made a crossbow or two they could have taken out the guy on the .50 and rushed the jokers with the AKs and would have had a .50, a truck, a bunch of supplies and cool items and a couple AKs and probably a few pistols which would have put them in good stead.

If it had been Major Po in charge my guess is that he would have captured the trader, his men and the truck, tortured them until they revealed their caches, tortured some others for the fun of it, used one to infect with small pox and then sold all the survivors into slavery.

Good point. I guess he would have had one eaten by The Blanket.

Hmmm, seems like you covered all the bases. I like the idea of infecting one then selling them to slavers. Slavery is morally reprehensible and really deserves to be stopped ;)

I haven't watched this show since the first time I found it channel surfing.

But something that would make this show cool is...zombies

supposedly, August 23 was supposed to be the day the zombies started appearing in the Day of the Dead series of movies? can anyone confirm?
