Raellus 07-12-2008, 02:53 PM Not sure if anyone here uses miniatures at all but I found some pretty cool 1:72 scale modern AFVs and soldiers that you may want to look at. I don't use miniatures- I don't even play FtF T2k- but when I saw these particular toys, I immediately thought Twilight 2000.
The brand is "Forces of Valor" and they're available at Target stores here in the U.S. They're probably available online too, but I haven't actually checked.
On the back of a T-72 package there were pics of an M1A1, a Bradley IFV, and M113, a Challenger MBT and a few other modern AFVs. They're pre-painted and highly detailed. Very realistic. Only problem is that they're all painted in desert camo but I suppose that could either be remedied or overlooked. They also have squads of modern U.S. soldiers.
In case you're wondering, I've got a 4-year-old son so I have a perfectly good excuse to be perusing the toy shelves. ; )

weswood 07-12-2008, 07:13 PM This site doesn't sell, but it's a good place to get a review of plastic 1/72 scale figures:
http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/
Also, Dragon Models makes some great 1/72 scale armor models, but they're mostly WWII vintage.

Neal5x5 07-13-2008, 02:06 PM I've used 1:72 scale for a while and really like the inexpensive cost and good availability. IMHO, Forces of Valor is the best diecast, prepainted 1:72 scale armor out there for the money. While much of their stuff is WWII, they also have:
M2 (Iraq, 2003)
M1A1 (desert and tri-color forest)
M113 (Iraq, 2003)
Challenger 2 (Iraq, 203)
T-72 (Iraqi, 2003 and Russian green)
They also have a nice Dragon Wagon and a Blackhawk helicopter (for those who want to add a little firepower to their game).
The biggest problem I've had is finding opposition armor. MRC Easy Model has a nice set of BTR-80s in various paint schemes. Hobby Master has an expanding set of modern armor, including T-55s (Russian, Polish, and North Vietnamese), M46s (Korean) and such.
For personell, there's a ton of modern US and european military groups, but not much for modern Russians. I did find a great set of modern Russian soldiers, Chechen rebels (complete with decapitation scene), and modern resistence fighters (Iraqi, probably). If I get a chance, I'll post some images.

weswood 07-13-2008, 04:28 PM I've got the FoV M2 & M113, pretty nice.
I've got a plastic model BTR 60 and tracked down a die cast BTR 80, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I agreee, modern russians are hard to find.
Here's a couple on line dealers I've had good luck with:

TiggerCCW UK 07-13-2008, 04:45 PM Esci/ERTL used to do some modern 1:72nd plastic figures, including modern NATO (mixed bag of nations, some odd poses, not a lot of use), modern US (mostly pretty good, but still the odd duff pose) and modern Spetsnaz (some really nice figures, some really useless poses). There is another company making modern figures, including modern British, US, German and KSK special ops, but I can't remember the manufacturer. I'll have a look when I get home on Tuesday and see if I have the box for any of thm knocking around.
There are quite a few 1:72nd scale modern kits out there as well, but it all boils down to whether you've the time/patience to make them.

gstitz 07-13-2008, 06:35 PM I have a number of different 1/72 scale vehicles from many different companies:
MRC Easy Model
pre-built plastic
Italian Ariete MBT (two different versions)
Russian BTR-80
M113 Ambulance
M113 NATO 3-color camo
M113 Vietnam OD
M113 Vietnam ACAV
M1126 Stryker
British AS-90 SPG
Challenger II with Dozer Blade
North Vietnamese T-34 (something for my M113s to fight)
Dragon
diecast metal
German Leopard 2A5 MBT
M1A1 HA With Mine Plough
British Challenger MBT
M2A2 NATO 3-color camo
AAV7A1
Humvees (five different versions)
FOV
diecast Metal
T-72 (repainted in Russian Green)
Russian cossacks on horseback
Battlefield Evolution
Wargaming minis made of plastic
Chinese MBT
Tunguska AA Vehicle
(these vehicles are NOT 1/72 scale, although they are sold as such. They are probably 1/60 scale, IMHO, but they are the only game in town for these vehicles)
I also have five different LAV-25s from some European company that I can't think of right now.
The MRC Easy Model M113 is FAR better than the FOV one. Also, if you want a NATO-green M1A1, I would recommend getting a Dragon one, rather than trying to repaint the FOV one. The one with the mine plough can be had pretty cheaply, and I think they have made at least one other version in NATO 3-color. Obviously, right now, most of the modern vehicles are coming out in desert colors.
Don't EVEN ask me about kits. The one good thing about 1/72 kits is that they are easy to hide...
