View Full Version : Warsaw Pact TOEs
I decided to open a new thread. Here I'll post all the information I have on TOEs for Soviet and Warsaw Pact Forces. First of all I'll post the material on the T2K books and then other stuff.
If other people are interested too in this thread, please go ahead and post what do you have!

of note is that it appears GDW really screwed up the TOE for the Soviet airborne divisions in that they only gave them 3 battalions of airborne infantry, when in reality they had three regiments, although they could have been either airborne infantry, Airborne Motorized Rifle in BMD's, or Heliborne (AirAssault) infantry. See the SU had TOE model divisions, but in reality actual division organizations were all over the place.

These are what I've been working off of. They are a combination of Isby's Weapons and Tactics of the Soviet Army (1988), FM-101-2-3, Russian-language sources and reported holdings from the CFE Treaty data exchange.

Motor-Rifle Divisions sometimes had independent tank and anti-tank battalions, sometimes they didn't. Tank divisions never had AT battalions, sometimes (seldom) they had independent tank battalions. Lower-readiness (especially mobilization-only) divisions would be at less than full strength (only a single MRR with APCs, for example, or a tank battalion instead of a tank regiment, or missing battalions or even whole regiments). Likewise, the above are "model" TOEs, some divisions (especially in East Germany and the Western USSR) were overstrength (with 2 BMP regiments or 152mm howitzers in MRRs) and some had modified TOEs based on the terrain (units in the Arctic, for example, frequently had 4 MRRs with PT-76s instead of MBTs and a tank battalion instead of a tank regiment).

BTW, these are for Soviet divisions. The non-Soviet Warsaw Pact troops had various differences... Bulgarians had MTLBs, some with BMP-1 turrets, instead of BMPs and some BTRs. Polish T-55 regiments had 5 16-tank companies with no battalions. Most Czech divisions had 2 BMP regiments. Hungary abandoned divisions in 1987 and went with a bde/corps structure, abolishing mobilization-only units (I brought them back as divisions as a result of the Black Winter). Non-Soviet nations' equipment was frequently older, even pre-war at times, although often when a nation produced items under license it was issued in greater quantity than in a comparable Soviet unit (such as divisions with 2S1 122mm howitzers in all 4 "teeth" regiments instead of just the tank and BMP regiments.

Some more "model" TOEs, for higher-level formations:
Army:
1 tank division
3 motor-rifle divisions
engineer regiment/bde
1-2 artillery rgt/bdes
SSM (Scud/SS-23) bde (I unrolled the late 80s consolidation of FROG-7/SS-21s from the divisions to army-level bdes).
helicopter rgt (mix of Mi-8/17s and Mi-24/8s)
ADA bde
possible:
independent tank or combined-arms bn
independent air assault bn
AT regiment
MRL regiment
additional artillery units or independent tank or MR regiments
Front:
artillery division (2-4 howitzer or gun rgts, AT rgt, MRL rgt, heavy arty rgt)
air assault bde
Spetsnaz bde
0-1 tank armies
2-6 combined arms armies
assault gun bde (2-3 assault gun bns, ea 40 assault guns & 20 BMPs, plus BM-21s)
1 or more missile bdes (Scaleboard)
ADA bde
1 or more engineer rgt/bdes

I have always overlooked as a typo, and the fact that the Polish Airborne Division which had been reduced to more of Brigade size than a Division.
Thank you for the info!
Again, the strenghts below reflect prewar levels. TOEs are almost the same from my previous post so I'll write here only the changes of the second version and the new ones.
