TiggerCCW UK 08-17-2008, 02:34 PM I was just browsing around Google Maps and came across an Ekranoplane in Kaspiysk. Search Kapsiysk in google maps and look at the harbour. If you head across to the east where the hard pan is there is a second smaller Ekranoplane and a number of hovercraft. Does anyone recognise the larger hovercraft? Are they Zubrs?

Also, in Windows Live Search Maps if you look at the RN base in Portsmouth there is a very oddly shaped vessel moored just down from HMS Ocean. Its to the south, moored in the opening of a dry dock, with a very narrow bow and stern. Anyone any idea what it is?

All answers gratefully received.

The two larger hovercraft seem to be Aist-class. the medium ones seem to be Lebed-class and the smaller ones should be Gus-class. Can you confirm for the medium and smaller one. I'll go at Portsmouth now.

It is the "Triton", a survey ship built by vosper thornycroft and woolston. It has been launched in 1999 and entered service in 2001 I think.

If you can find it there is a good german book on the subject: Weyers Flotten Taschenbuch 2002/2004 edited by Bernard & Graefe Verlag Bonn.

I don't know if there is a more recent edition but it is great, written both in english and german. It also provides numerous identification drawings and several colour pictures.

Nowhere Man 1966 08-18-2008, 10:03 AM Another interesting place to Google Map is the Boneyard at Davis-Mothan AFB. I saw slews of B-52's, F-4's, A-7's and lot of others. Come to think of it, some of those A-7's flew out of Pittsburgh International in the PA Air National Guard.
