Folks here seem to know a lot about almost everything.

I just found a pair of infant desert cottontails that my dogs dug out of their burrow. One's got at least a broken leg and is just barely hanging on. The other appears unhurt. There was no sign of their mother. They're really new- they haven't even openned their eyes yet. We also found four brothers and sisters that didn't make it.

Anyone have any experience rescuing infant mammals before? I don't have high hopes of saving them but I'd like to try at least.

Here in San Antonio, we have an organization called Animal Wildlife Rescue that deals with that sort of thing. Caring for these little guys is beyond the abilities of even a good normal veterinarian. This is the kind of place you need to find. Immediately, if possible; I know it's late. At the least, get them to a veterinarian -- many know of such an organization to hand them off to, and can give them emergency care in the meantime. Most cities also have animal emergency clinics these days, and they may be willing to do the same thing without charging you. But do it now.

What Paul said. My rabbits were adults when they came to me.

Our miniature dachshund would love to meet the rabbits. Assuming the alligators don't get to him first.

I've never understood the idea of miniature dachshunds. Daschsies are already so small!

How are the rabbits, Raellus?

Apparently not small enough to go after smaller burrowing animals.

I followed your advice, Paul. We couldn't find a vet that was open last night but we found a number for a private animal rescue outfit. They agreed to take the bunnies in the morning.

The one with the broken leg didn't make it through the night. The other did and was delivered to the rescue place this morning. I hope he pulls through.

As for Dachsies...

My family's had a few. They're cute as all get out but they're very tempermental and not too bright. It's hard to believe that they were bred to take on badgers. The one we had when I was a teen used to go after toxic toads in our backyard in Uruguay. He'd savage them and then come into the house frothing at the mouth. Once he even had seizures and we had to take him to the vet. Our vet was a Dutch expat by the name of- get this- Doctor Pett.

There's a very good doctor (can't remember the specialty) who's name is Dr. Soo. I've often wondered if he gets a lot of jokes about that at parties.
