So I was going over the DC Groups works regarding the returning troops from Europe during Operation Omega and started to wonder two things.
Do you think returning troops would be more inclined to go AWOL and try to get back home IF:
1 - They were stationed back in their home states? As in their unit was sent to Florida and they grew up in Tampa type thing...
2 - Were close to their homes in Norfolk to begin with? They grew up in western Virginia and they havent been moved to another location yet...
NOTE::: Not trying to comment on the DC Groups work as I LOVE IT! Just asking anyone who follows the return of thousands of US troops back to Norfolk.

Desertion to go see if friends and family made it would probably increase dramatically the closer the guys got to home. Probably also tracks pretty closely with rural backgrounds, since there's better odds that people out in the country would still be there compared to urban areas.
As for how many would take the chance . . . open question. Most, if not all, must think about it, but you'd also think that most of the guys who managed to survive 1996-2000 in Europe are in the 'hard as a coffin nail' category and probably pragmatic enough to figure their chance of surviving is better as part of an armed organization that trying to make it cross country alone or in small groups with only what they can carry on their back.

The reasons for units to stay together once returned to the US are basically the same as the reasons they stay together in Europe - there's strength in numbers and the military is essentially responsible for keeping their soldiers fed, clothes and sheltered.
Naturally there will be a number who will desert to find family etc, and this will be a significant loss of manpower. There is also the high likelyhood that excess manpower will be demobilised, thereby reducing the stresses on the remnants of military supply networks.

Go to the T2K Forum Thread Map at the top of the thread list and look for the links under "User - DC Working Group".
