US Naval Bases and Ports

So who provides security for naval bases and ports? I can't seem to locate any information about their security, a link is fine. :)

The only one I ever spent any time on had Department of Defense police for security.

Reason I ask is I am trying to figure out what sort of security units would be left to protect naval bases that are not in the direct control of a MILGOV / CIVGOV military unit.

Airbases have special details attached to them for security, naval bases dont have anything as organized I guess.

Anyone have any suggestions on what one might expect come 2000 in a T2K environment?

Well in my experiance the local major Air Force base is guarded by what looks like armed Renta-cops.As long as everyone has legit looking visitor's passes and ID's getting on is no problem.

As far as the local Naval Weapons Station goes...There are guys running around there carrying an "X-Force" handle. From what little i know they all have demo training, carry weapons at all times and most telling they carry radiation badges.

Anything that has strategic value (nuclear weapons sites, strategic commo sites, key wartime industrial facilities, etc.) are going to have their security heavily augmented once the war kicks off. I'd think a mix of civilian security forces (DOD Police, properly vetted private security companies, local/state law enforcement perhaps as well in some cases) and military, though not necessarily with any sort of strict adherence to branch ownership of facilities. It's possible you'd see soldiers or USAF security units helping garrison ports or other strategic navy facilities.

I think in WW2 they had some sort of separate government agency set up that provided security elements for essential industries. I'm not sure if that would make sense in the T2K timeline as much as the government just contracting out a lot of security to security guard companies. Some of the bigger companies already provided some fairly serious site security alongside the more common mall cop jobs and such, before 9/11 when "security contractor" got a more sexy air to it.

There's a really easy way to find out. Just park your car across the road for a few days and hang a pair of binoculars out the window. Probably wouldn't hurt to take a bunch of photos with a telescopic lense while you're at it...

I think most naval ports would be guarded by DOD security police personel and Naval or Marine Corps personel. I knew two guys when I was in, that before coming to the grunts where in RTT. One was stationed at Bangor in Washington and the other was at Kings Bay in Georgia. There jobs were to recapture the nuke magazines for the submarines if someone was to take them down. That was the only thing they were there for. Other marine security forces personel are normally found at naval bases. As far as dudes on a ship, Marines security forces don't do that anymore. It's usually some sailors they hand a M-14 to for the day, like someone on armed duty.

So the consensus seems to be private/civilian security or perhaps Marines?

Reason I ask is I am trying to understand the New London/Groton drama in TheLastSubmarine and they note that the "Marines and sailors reinforced the front gate", seeming to imply that there was a Marine detachment there at least. Yet I cant find anything about marine security detachments being used as port security.

I dont want to expose any security risks or anything just trying to figure out how the military would reinforce important naval bases and ports in time of war.

Pearl Harbor has civilians at the gates, but the port patrol is manned by sailors. All of the other Navy and Marine facilities on Oahu had Marines at the gates when I went through them (Kaneohe Bay and Camp Smith).

Kalos, your attention to detail is commendable. I'd say that a lot of things can be explained away by the idea that pre-war arrangements don't always survive the start of hostilities.

For instance, what if it is discovered that ABC Security has been penetrated by Soviet agents? ABC is immediately pulled from security duties. Marines are sent in as an interim force. Alternatively, a mucky-muck from ABC could have pissed off somebody important. Again, ABC Security loses its contract overnight and has to be replaced by somebody reliable while a new contract is negotiated with someone else. Many possibilities along this line exist.

For the record while stationed in New London during the 80's Marines did provide base security Later when I took the wife and kid up to see the Natulsis I seen that the DOD , Police now guarded the front gate

I know at North Island NAS, San Diego the Navy has there own water borne patrols as does the Coast Guard.
