IIRC (I was barely a teenager), back in the '80s, the turretless tank concept was pretty in vogue. It really looked like it was the next step in the evolution of MBT design.
I think that the GDW writers can be forgiven for jumping on that bandwagon when creating "future" tanks for T2K (the M1E2, T-90, and Leopard III). Obviously, IRL, no one has really taken that route to its logical conclusion. It's kind of a cool "what if". As a GM, I say use what you like. If you prefer the RL tanks of that generation (i.e. the '90s), use them. If you like the more conceptual stuff from the T2K desingers, use that instead.
