Last known WW1 veteran dies aged 110

Sad news indeed. Claude Choules, formerly of the Royal Navy, died in his sleep last night. Mr Choules joined the Navy at the age of 15 and served aboard HMS Revenge.

God rest your soul Mr Choules.

End of a generation, doesn't matter who there where or what side they fought for, the men who fought in WW1 where something else, someting i don't think we'll see again.

There was certainly a lot of bravery involved.
Mind you I don't think we want to see their like again, not if it means a return to the horrors of the trenches.

Sad news indeed. Claude Choules, formerly of the Royal Navy, died in his sleep last night.

And of all places he was living in a retirement village right here in my city! He moved out here in the 1920s I think, transferring to the Royal Australian Navy and ending up as the senior NCO in charge of naval demolitions for the entire west coast of Australia during the 1930s.

What an extraordinary life, to have joined the RN at 14 and to have witnessed the scuttling of the German fleet at Scapa Flow at the end of the Great War. Apparently Mr Choules declined to march in any remembrance marches as he abhorred war. By all accounts he was a devoted family man. I listened to an interview with his grandson the other day, from what he said I think Mr Choules was the kind of grandfather we'd all like to have.

In related geriatric news, I recently read a story that a UK immigrant to New Zealand has been told he can't participate in their neighborhood watch/patrol program any more until he finds a new partner. The gentleman, aged 91, has the counter argument that if he could handle service in North Africa with the Long Range Desert Group he could damn well handle driving around at night at calling the police if he sees something suspicious.

110 years old, what a Champion! Bet he didn't drink or smoke, had good genes and maintained good cardio-vascular fitness. And imagine all the changes he saw in his lifetime, from horse and cart to space shuttles for example, amazing. End of an era. Lest we forget.
