Additional Comments: The RPD-7D is the standard anti-tank launcher of
the Warsaw Pact Forces, although it was beingsuperseded by newer designs like the RPD and RPG-18 by the time the War broke out. The basic design is quite simple and effective, though the round can be pushed off-target by strong crosswinds. This particular version can be disassembled into two parts to shorten the launch tube for the convenience of paratroops.

The RPG-7V is a recoilless, shoulder-fired, muzzle-loaded, reloadable, antitank grenade launcher. It fires a variety of rocket-assisted grenades
from a 40-mm smoothbore launcher tube. It is the standard squad antitank weapon in use by the OPFOR. The RPG-7V is light enough to be
carried and fired by one person. However, an assistant grenadier normally deploys to the left of the gunner to protect him from small arms fire.
The RPG-7V requires a well-trained gunner to estimate ranges and lead distances for moving targets. Crosswinds as low as 7 miles per hour can
complicate the gunner's estimate and reduce first-round hit probability to 50% at ranges beyond 180 meters.

Additional Comments: The RKG-3M is an anti-tank hand grenade and as
such has no direct equivalent in the MP issue equipment. The explosive is a shaped charge in the head of the grenade. When the pin is pulled, a four panel fabric drogue is released as the grenade is thrown, arming it and guiding it so that it impacts nose first. As these grenades have an impact detonator they will fail to explode only 15% of the time.

Often easy to spot, these are used often to protect wire obstacles, road blocks, and the perimeter of buried mine fields.

Stake mines for antipersonnel missions were developed during World War II by the Soviets and copied from them by the Germans. The Soviet POMZ-2 of that period used an iron fragmentation body (like that of a hand grenade) with six rows offragments, but when the Germans copied the mine they substituted concrete with metal fragments imbedded in it. The Soviet mine used standard components such as the 75-gram bore-hole charge and either the MUV or VPF pull fuze. The mines were normally laid in clusters of at least four mines and were fitted with trip wires. After the war the mine was modified by threading the fuze hole, using the MUV-2 pull fuze,and reducing the rows of fragments from six to five. The modifications resulted in a change in nomenclature to POMZ-2M. The mine is still in the active inventory.

Difficult to detect and small in size (about the same as a can of shoe polish).

The Soviet PMN plastic mine is a post-World War II development which has been employed on the East German border as well as in Vietnam. The casing of the PMN is made of duroplastic and has a side hole for the firing mechanism and primer charge.The top half of the mine case has a rubber mantle which issecured by a metal clasp. The mine is activated by pressure on the top of the case. This pressure releases a spring-loaded striker, in turn hitting the percussion cap capsule, thus setting off the main charge. On laying the mine, after removing the safety pin there is a 15 to 20 minute delay in arming. The mine cannot be disarmed.

Comments The KPV-14.5 heavy machine gun (KPV is an initialism for Krupnokaliberniy Pulemyot Vladimirova, in Russian as Крупнокалиберный Пулемёт Владимирова, or КПВ) is a Soviet designed 14.5x114mm-caliber heavy machine gun, which first entered service as an infantry weapon (designated PKP) in 1949. In the 1960s the infantry version was taken out of production because it was too big and heavy. It was later redesigned for anti-aircraft use, because it showed excellent results as an AA gun, with a range of 3,000 meters horizontally and 2,000 meters vertically against low flying planes.[1] It was used in the ZPU series of anti-aircraft guns. Its size and power also made it a useful light anti-armour weapon on the BTR series of vehicles and the BRDM-2 scout car.

The version for use in armoured vehicles is called the KPVT (tankoviy, 'tank'). KPVT is used for armoured vehicle installations, boats, movable and stationary mounts and various antiaircraft mounts. It features a shorter receiver and a heavier barrel jacket. The KPVT also uses a 50-round belt instead of the original 40-round belt. KPVTs are the primary armament of the wheeled BTR-60PB/70/80 series armoured personnel carriers and BRDM-2 armoured reconnaissance vehicles. It is intended for fighting against light armoured targets, weapons systems and light shelters at the distances of up to 3000 m, as well as air targets at distances up to 2000 m.

The development of the machine gun began in 1944. The 14.5x114mm M41 cartridge can be used with High Explosive Incendiary - Tracer (HEI-T) or Armour-Piercing Incendiary (API) bullets, and they have approximately twice the energy of a 12.7 mm (.50 BMG) projectile. The KPV is air-cooled and fitted with barrel with a hard chrome plated bore. It uses a short recoil operation system with gas assistance and a rotary bolt. It can be fed with the 40-round metallic belt from either the left or right side. The barrel can be removed by turning the prominent latch on the forward end of the receiver and pulling on the barrel's carrying handle.

80 cartridges are separated into two metal boxes and those are packed in a wooden box. This box has the caliber, type of bullet, Lot.-No., number of rounds and type of propellant painted on, it measures 480x350x160mm and weighs 23kg. Ammunition has been manufactured in Bulgaria, China, Egypt, Hungary, Iraq, North Korea, Poland, Romania, Russia and the former Czechoslovakia.

Additional Comments: The DShK 1938 (ДШК, for Дегтярёва-Шпагина Крупнокалиберный, Degtyaryova-Shpagina Krupnokaliberny, 'Degtyaryov-Shpagin Large-Calibre') is a Soviet heavy machine gun firing the 12.7×108mm cartridge. The weapon was also used as a heavy infantry machine gun, in which case it was frequently deployed with a two-wheeled mounting and a single-sheet armour-plate shield. It took its name from the weapons designers Vasily Degtyaryov, who designed the original weapon, and Georgi Shpagin, who improved the cartridge feed mechanism. It is sometimes nicknamed Dushka (lit. "Sweetie", "Dear"), from the abbreviation.

The requirement for a heavy machine gun appeared in 1929. The first such gun, the Degtyaryov, Krupnokalibernyi (DK, Degtyaryov, Large calibre), was built in 1930 and this gun was produced in small quantities from 1933 to 1935.

The gun was fed from a drum magazine of only thirty rounds, and had a poor rate of fire. Shpagin developed a belt feed mechanism to fit to the DK giving rise, in 1938, to the adoption of the gun as the DShK 1938. This became the standard Soviet heavy machine gun in World War II.

Like its U.S. equivalent, the M2 Browning, the DShK 1938 was used in several roles. As an anti-aircraft weapon it was mounted on pintle and tripod mounts, and on a triple mount on the GAZ-AA truck. Late in the war, it was mounted on the cupolas of IS-2 tanks and ISU-152 self-propelled guns. As an infantry heavy support weapon it used a two-wheeled trolley which unfolded into a tripod for anti-aircraft use, similar to the mount developed by Vladimirov for the 1910 Maxim gun.[1] It was also mounted in vehicle turrets, for example, in the T-40 light amphibious tank.

In 1946, the DShK 1938/46 or DShKM (M for modernized) version was introduced.

In addition to the Soviet Union and Russia, the DShK has been manufactured under license by a number of countries, including the People's Republic of China, Pakistan and Romania. Today, it has been mostly replaced in favour of the more modern NSV and Kord designs. Nevertheless, the DShK is still one of the most widely used heavy machine guns.

VARIANTS
RPG-29 comes in three versions. The shoulder launch version is the base version described here (see photo above). The shoulder launch RPG-29 could become a standard squad ATGL for maneuver forces; However, the launcher, even stripped down for shoulder launch, is considered to be fairly burdensome and ungainly for use with squads attempting to move quickly in close quarters and dense cover. Thus the RPG-32/Hashim (below) was developed.

RPG-29 Mounted is an improved crew-served launcher upgrade for a more limited use ground and vehicle mount (see page 6-21). For Tier 1 and Tier 2 COE OPFOR, RPG-29 Mounted is the crew weapon in Weapons Squads and other supporting tactical units.

RPG-29N: Night sight only shoulder-launch variant, used the 1PN51-2 night sight.

RPG-32/Hashim: Russian/Jordanian 105-mm ATGL with RPG-29V variant tandem HEAT and HE thermobaric grenades (pg 2-30). The launcher base is a short tube with optics and trigger assembly. Sight is a collimating (binocular rangefinder) day/II night sight. The canister sleeve fits inside the short launcher stub to serve as a launch tube extension, resulting in a very lightweight 1.2-m length shoulder launcher ranging 700 m. Penetration is 850+mm vs conventional armor (E-factor= 4973) (650+ vs ERA) (E-factor= 3488) , with 2 per carry case. It can launch 72.5-mm MRO-A thermobaric multi-role grenade, and perhaps other 72.5-mm grenades. Jordanian KADDB offers a vehicle remote weapons station with 7.62-mm MG, Hashim launcher, and thermal sight. An upgrade is due in 2010, to add “precision” for increased range and 80% P-hit.

NOTES
RPG-29 is a multi-purpose fire support system with both AT and grenades. Thus it serves as all-purpose small unit artillery against the gamut of targets, including vehicles, personnel, buildings, and any other direct-fire targets within range - including helicopters.

Another neat feature is its “cold” launch. In less than a second the RPG-29’s propellant expends itself within the fiberglass tube and flies towards its target without leaving a smoke trail along its trajectory.
