Here's a unit that is not in canon, mainly because it was thought to be only a battalion when T2K came out, and NATO Vehicle Guide has the battalion as divisional recon for the German 1st FJD: The East German 40th Air Assault Regiment, or Luftsturmregiment 40. Built using the 40th Airborne Battalion as a cadre in the 1980s, and expanded to regimental size after digesting Soviet combat experience in Afghanistan. Note: the East German leadership viewed the regiment as politically reliable, so when the East German Army leaders decide on their coup, they'd best make sure this regiment is on their side, or have the 1st Motor-Rifle Division at Potsdam neutralize it. (the regiment was based at Lehnin, near Potsdam)

Not much in English is known about the unit, other than wikipedia. And thus:

I've always liked the idea of some GDR forces remaining loyal to the old regime and fighting on with the Soviets.

James and this wiki site.. http://twilight2000.wikia.com/wiki/R%C3%BCgen_Island touch on this with GDR forces ocupying Rugen Island. GDR forces are made up of ultra-loyal German communists, as well as from many German POW offered a position in newly raised units.

Agreed. I think it would be inevitable that there would be some hard core communists in the East German military who would side with the Soviets.
