Some images from Reign of Fire, which although it is not my idea of an apocalypse, certainly has some apocalyptic imagery.
Personally, the scene where the armored column rumbles up to the front gate of the survivors castle really is right out of TW2K. Too bad it was a movie about dragons.

Scott,
I really didn't think that much of Reign of Fire. I'm still trying to figure out how the hell they got across the Atlantic not to mention where they kept getting fuel and spare parts for all of the vehicles. Especially the helicopter. Guess I played too much T2K huh!:)

A movie I thought was good, though most people seem to throw rotten tomatoes at it, was Virus -- the 1980 movie, not the newer one. It has an interesting plot, with the last survivors of humanity being in Antarctica, and throws a nuclear "war" started by automated defense systems in the US and Russia to boot. The virus also is man-made, called MM88, and accidentally let loose by a simple aircraft crash in the Alps.

If you are a post-apocalyptic completist, like me, then I guess you have to see it... much like I'm going to end up seeing The Book of Eli despite being completely turned off by the plot. I mean really...
SPOILER ALERT
(spoiler space)
(spoiler space)
... the LAST bible? He's carrying the LAST bible? In one generation every bible in North America is destroyed? How is that likely? Did the ICBMs home in on Hotel 6s and blow up all the Gideon Bibles? People in this country are more likely to burn their copy of Grey's Anatomy for warmth before they burn their bible.
As for Doomsday... it's got a lot of problems.
Number 1: Why is it that after the apocalypse the only clothing that seems to survive is punk rock fetish wear?
Number 2: Since when can you take out a moving armored car with a cross-bow bolt to the driver through the armored window. And if they're such good shots with crossbows, why didn't they urban horde just stand off and silently snipe the team of soldiers and scientists from the shadows?
Number 3: Why do the urban punks engage is suicidal human wave attacks until the soldiers run out of ammo? The ruins are their home turf. They are supposed to know every nook and cranny of the ruins and should be able to use it to their advantage, but instead they just yell a lot and run out in the open waving improvised weapons and get mowed down .
Number 4: If the urban punks are cannibals, why did they only cook and eat the one live person they caught. What about all the dead guys that were killed in the battle? What about their own dead? Enough of their own got mowed down in those human wave attacks to keep the rest of them fed for a week.
Number 5: the leader of the urban punks has to be the least charismatic leader I've ever seen. How did this lame-o get in charge of anything?
Number 6: Hot barbarian chick doesn't do shit. I mean, what I really hate is that the soldiers and scientists get ground under by wave after wave of suicidal attacks until the last few get captured. Then this chick with all the face tats and cleavage strolls up, all covered in bad ass attitude and stands around looking tough. WTF? Tough? I didn't see her do shit during the attack. Where the hell was she when all the bullets were flying? But we, the audience is supposed to be impressed with her? Just because she dresses well? Who remembers Mad Max 2 aka The Road Warrior? Remember Wez? We knew he was bad ass and scary because we saw him be bad ass and scary. I freakin' hate it when movie makers drop villains in front of me that are supposed to be impressive and then do nothing except show them fail to kill the hero.
Number 7: I could just go on and on nit-picking this one to death, going through each logical fallacy, each lame plot moment, each uninspired action sequence, but really, isn't the main problem here that we already saw this movie once before. It was called Escape for New York.

Absolutely great movie, love how the firefight at the end tapers off when everyone involved is stunned by the sight and sound of a baby -- then, right before the usual crap Hollywood voice over would start talking about how that's the day the world changed -- the guys down the street crank the kill fest right back up and it's business as usual.

I'm guessing the weapon in question needs no introduction to T2K fans, though hardly anyone else would know what the thing was. Think the picture is from the original invasion of Iraq (tan nomex, woodland IBA, and 3rd ID patch), but looks like it would fit right in as an illustration in the RDF Sourcebook.

It's a standard M231 FPW. But I'm surprised to see it being used in such a manner. When I was in, the Army was quite hinky about how the M231 was employed -- it was a firing port weapon and that was that.

M231, exactly, and as per what Paul said interesting to see it being used as a TC's personal defense weapon up in the turret (note 550 dummy cord, too). Back during the invasion, TC's MTOE weapon was an M9, which helps explain it, too.

I could not agree more. IMO, the end combat sequence is the most T2K-esque material ever captured on film. Thanks for posting those pics.
Same goes for the Road Warrior or whatever the Aussies call it (I thought Mad Max was the title of the first one- which I don't particularly care for). I have seen RW at least a dozen times and it never gets old. The costume designer certainly set the standard for post-apoc marauder wear.
Speaking of which, the punks in the pics from Doomsday remind me of the raiders in the game Fallout 3. If you like post-apoc action RPGs, I highly recommend it. It's probably my favorite video game ever.

Maybe. My Bradley time was on M3s, but I've met a number of 11M's (or 11B's after the Mikes went away) who were on Bradleys and had a very minimal knowledge of the things. I think in a lot of units they got shoved into some mostly forgotten corner of the arms room and such.

Doesn't suprise me in the least. When we got there we discovered that even though we was armoued cav, we did a lot of dismounted patrols. At one point we was clean out of 5.56 and did a 12 man patrol with 4 aks and 8 240's.
Turned out the only way we could get 556 and 9mil was by buying it off of the Haji's.

I would not want to be on, under, near, or around that technical when they fire that gun - I'd imagine that the...wooden? 2x4? frame that it is sitting on would not take the load stresses very well and things would quickly get dynamic.

I've seen a closer video of it firing, although the firing could be simulated. Basically they seem to drive it up and point it at a target, fine aim it with the little adjusting wheels and then everyone gets clear and one man reaches up into the turret and fires it.
Close up the framework looks to be angle iron, but like I said, the video that was supposed to prove it fired could have been rigged. The gun went boom but they could have had a firework up there for all I know.

I thought maybe that the MG has been poorly maintained and he is using his foot on the cocking handle (its on the left side of the receiver on the PKM isn't it?). But you're right atiff, the shadows show that both feet are clear of the weapon.

09-30-2011, 06:56 PM
In a nutshell, the RPG HEAT round, like any High Explosive Anti-Tank round, exploits a phenomenon called the Monroe Effect to focus a portion of the energy of a chemical explosion into a pencil-thin armor penetrator sometimes called a plasma bolt. The shaped charge that generates the Monroe Effect incorporates an inverted cone, usually copper, surrounded by high explosives inside a casing like the exterior of an RPG round. When the explosive detonates, the inverted cone reverses its orientation, turning from concave (the point facing back towards the main body of the round) to convex (the point facing towards the target). The metal of the cone becomes super-heated and is focused by the Monroe Effect into a pencil-thin penetrator. Some speak of a plasma bolt burning through armor. Technically, this idea is not accurate. The penetrator acts more like a spike driven by a colossal pile driver. Pressure on the order of 100,000 atmospheres cause the penetrator to pierce the armor and liquefy it by sheer kinetic energy as the penetrator pushes forward. When the penetrator reaches the open cavity inside the crew compartment, the crew is exposed to an effect called spalling. The armor liquefied by the penetrator sprays across the interior of the crew compartment. Also, the penetrator becomes less focused and contributes to the spray of very high temperature material moving through the interior spaces of the target vehicle. At the very least, the crew will suffer injuries as a result of spalling, and equipment will be damaged. Spalling or the plasma bolt itself may strike ammunition or fuel, often resulting in what is euphemistically termed a catastrophic kill.
The penetrating power of a given HEAT round versus RHS (rolled homogenous steel) typically equals three times the diameter of the warhead. In cases in which the penetrating power of the HEAT warhead significantly overmatches the armor of the target, the penetrator might actually cross the interior space, penetrate the armor on the other side, and exit the target vehicle. This is a likely result of an RPG HEAT round striking the side armor of an M113. This is not to say that the passengers and crew won’t be KIA or WIA. Spalling will produce numerous injuries. Anyone actually struck by the plasma bolt will be killed or badly wounded. The plasma bolt may strike fuel, ammunition, or explosives inside the crew compartment. It’s unlikely, though, that the penetrator will fail to exit the vehicle, given the enormous penetrating power of an RPG HEAT round vis-à-vis the armor of an M113 or any other APC.

Anyone want to put up their hand to take all the pictures from this thread and create an album? Would be a labour of love and require a bit of maintenance (adding further pictures as they were submitted unless there's a way anyone can contribute).
Albums allow comments on the individual pictures without clogging the place with excess chatter. The thumbnails in the albums also make it a LOT easier to find the picture yuo really want.

If you go to the "Community" drop down you'll see "Pictures & Albums".
Some have already taken advantage of this under utilised site feature. Some of the pics in this thread may already be in those existing albums so there's not need to repeat them I would think. We also appear to have a number of pics in this thread which have been repeated either by quoting, or unintentionally - take the burning M113 a few posts back for example.
With probably over a thousand pics in here, it's not going to be a quick job, and it will require maintenance from the album "owner" - updates as photos are submitted and removal of duplicates as necessary.

That's one way to create spaced armour and break up the vehicle outline a little. Not sure how effective it would be, but then anyone mad enough to be in a T-34 on a modern battlefield would want to do absolutely everything in their power to make it just a little bit more survivable.
I've seen and used that type of matting before. If it's what I think, it's not actually belted with metal, but has a layer of strong material sandwiched in the rubber. Usually used for flooring in things like horse floats, cattle trucks and the like where slipping can be a very bad thing.

Hey Apache6, the images and story you're posting are great :)
One query though... that "bulldozer" isn't really a bulldozer :(
From the look of the running gear, the overall shape and the mesh on the side, I'd say it's an M4 High Speed Tractor, originally used to tow artillery (the mesh would be protection for the radiator).
Here's a picture of the M4 for comparison from http://www.g503.com/forums//viewtopic.php?f=24&t=192894
http://www.surfacezero.com/g503/data/500/m_4_tractor.jpg
Normally there'd be a box body on the rear for stowing artillery rounds and beneath that is a large capacity winch. I wonder if the reason the Croats created such a long rubber skirt for this vehicle is to retain access to the winch?

Here's a few 'scenario starter' photos.
One is a photo of a once grand house, which the players unit overnight in.
Also a bridge that they have to cross to escape a overwhelming enemy force that is closing in on them. It was once a Military Load Class 100 (MLC100) bridge, meaning it should have supported vehicles up to 100 tons easily. They knew it was still up, but had heard rumor it was damaged. When they arrive this is what they see. It's an Esy CbtEngr task to assess that it will not support more then 5 + 4d6 tons at any time in it's current condition. It's a difficult CbtEngr Task to figure out how to conduct temporary repairs that will allow it to support up to 50 tons. That will take 8d10 manhours of labor and pioneer tools.
The rocket photos: Your players are hiding in a woods, they hear trucks pull up into a clearing a few hundred meters away. If they go check it out they will see four trucks, a UAZ jeep and a BRDM-2 setting up in a clearing between 50 - 150 meters from the edge of a woodline which has good rocky cover. This is an enemy artillery battery and likely constitutes a good portion of the enemies main artillery force. They have 4 type-63 12 shot, 107mm MRLs. Each truck pulls one and carries 6 men armed with 1 RPK, 5 AKs, each vehicle has a RPG-7 but only 3 of them have any rockets. Each vehicle also carries 72 extra rockets for the MRL. The BRDM will orient it's gun down the road toward where they perceive NATO forces are. One man from each truck will stand with an RPK 'on a lax guard.' but non of them will go much more then 30m from the vehicle. The UAZ has a large antena, and is obviously the FDC for the battery. If the charcters do nothing they will take 30 minutes to set up the MRLs and aiming stakes then wait quietly for 50 minutes before they jump into activilty, relaying firing commands, applying firing data then opening up with a volley of 48 rockets, 8 minutes after then receive a call for fire. If the players engage, the artillery unit will most brake and run quickly. They are very likely to leave behind significant spoils, including ammo, diesel, and possibly a vehicle or two (if PCs can capture/KO the drivers).
The stagecoach used to be a tourist attraction at a "wild west attraction." But it's been pressed into service, since it's approbriate technology for the local civilians. Used to carry passengers, mail and small packages on a 130 km route, which it covers at about a 30km a day pace. The driver is armed with a pistol and sawed off double barrel shotgun. The gentlemen riding 'shotgun' is better armed with a assualt rifle with grenade launcher with 3 HE rounds.
One time when your PCs have set up an effective deliberate defense, they should see there enemies, herding civlians from the local town (ideally with which your PCs have good relations), toward them in front of their vehicles to act as human shields.
The church is also a location your charachters, or some local civilians might use for shelter.

One realistic and challenging encounter might be to let the PCs find a vehicle which is in good condition, it might even have ammo on board, but it's heavily mired, like the armored track loader in one of these pictures. If you can get it out, it's a great addition to your capabilities.
The Toyotas with scrounged rocket pods and AAA could be a local militia, friendly or hostile.
The Gun truck and 'pimped out' HUMVEE might make could vehicles for the PCs, or their enemies.

- Recommend that the background be urban ruins, possibly with a fallen bridge. A google search of Bosnia city damage should bring up plenty of reference photos.
- On the boat, a coal fired steam engine?
- In the foreground either a refugee family or a camp follower and her child?
- For the gun and gunner: add a gun shield with graffiti and maybe a spotlight(?), the gunner should be less uniform, posibly sporting a prosthetic leg or arm?
- Hope this is type of recommendation you are looking for?

Here are several different improvised armored vehicles built by various rebel factions and Mexican drug cartels, these include vehicles from Poland in 1939 through Bosnia, Libyia, and Syria.
I think these type of wheeled vehicles would be fairly common CONUS in T2K, more so than actual AFVs, but far less then common then 'gun-jeeps' or 'technicals.'
Not going to far well against a BMP-2 or LAV-25, but would be very usefull against poorly equipped militia.

Variety of operations, including the famous counter-attack down the metro rail line by the HQ elements of a US Army Div and NATO staff members which recaptured a critical bridge, allowing reinforcements to flow in and casualties out.

A UK sailor who could wash-up nearly anywhere and four female hunters who are sharing a laugh, though they are all that is availalbe to protect their hamlet after their men got swacked by New America or whoever. First photo show how Marines deployed might celebrate Christmas.
Second is the disappointing sight that created men arriving at an airfield where they were told there were jets. The third is a funtional CIA airfield. They can transport you where you need to go, after you do us a 'favor.'
The forth is a ship that wiht a lot of effort was put back into operaton. The last is a treasure trove, a cointainer ship that was abandoned early in the war and later ran aground. Rediscovered by a fishing boat after four years. How do you salvage it's riches?

Capt Johnson was originally a UH-60 pilot. She ended up as a intel specialist for 2d Marine Regiment. She married a Marine Major in Poland, the locals, who had great relations with the Marines, provided her dress.
