My oldest dog, Anya, looks like she may be headed out. She has an unidentified mass on her liver; she has had an X-Ray and she's getting an ultrasound tomorrow, but Dr Mathre says it may take surgery to confirm anything, and remove what's there. If it's a benign tumor, she may be OK, or if it's an encapsulated malignant tumor. Anything else, it's terminal. And with an 18-year-old dog, you have to think about the quality of her future life, even if she survives the treatment. Kona was 16 when she had her tumor, and the surgery is possibly related to her stroke 2 years later, and she was never the same.

I'm asking you guys to wish her luck.

Good luck man. I got two labbies here, an 11 and 12 year old so I know how it is with aging pups. Best of luck.

Eighteen's a pretty damn good run for a dog!
I know how you feel though. I had my first dog in my lap when he was put down, and the last just keeled over for no apparent reason when he was only about 6-7.

Anya passed away at about 3 PM. The actual problem was that her gall bladder was filled with a combination of blood, pus, bile, and the stuff gallstones are made of. The surgery at her age, and the recovery, would have been rough at her age, and it was probable that her quality of life would not improve by the removal of her gall bladder.

So we made the decision to put her down and let her go. We will have her cremated and keep her ashes with those of Shadow and Wolfie.

RIP Anya. I know it's tough but you made the right decision, Paul. Going off to sleep with the person you love the most right there with you isn't a bad way to go.

18 is a damn good innings for a wee woofie, shows she was well loved and looked after.

Sorry to hear that, Paul.

Maybe this poem will be some consolation.
