The Royal Norwegian Navy in Twilight

Personnel: 7,900 personnel; 2,000 civilians.

Naval Aviation: The RNN operates no aircraft itself. The Coast Guard operates 6 Lynx SAR helos. The Air Force operates 9 Sea King and 20 UH-1D as SAR helos. 4 P-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft are on order. The F-16 fighters can be used in a maritime strike role with the Penguin Mk3 ASM.

Displacement of 940/1,040 tons. Speed of 11/23kts. Crew of 20. Armament consists of eight 533mm torpedo tubes. German Type 210-class built in Norway. Entering service 1991-1993. Plagued by problems with noisy machinery and the RNN is reported to be very dissatisfied with the ships.

Displacement of 469/524 tons. Speed of 12/17kts. Crew of 18. Armament consists of eight 533mm torpedo tubes. Originally a class of fifteen, nine sisters have been sold to Denmark or discarded. Extensively modernized.

1 German Type 207 Training Diesel-Electric Submarine
S 309 Svenner
Displacement of 435/485 tons.
Speed of 10/17kts. Crew of 17. Armament consists of eight 533mm torpedo tubes. Sole unmodernized Type 207, used for training only and slatted for disposal in 1997.

5 Oslo-class Frigates
F 300 Oslo; F 301 Bergen; F 302 Trondheim; F 303 Stavanger; F 304 Narvik
Displacement of 1,850 tons. Speed of 25kts. Crew of 150. Armament consists of four single Penguin SSM launchers, one eight-cell Mk29 NATO Sea Sparrow SAM launcher, one twin Mk33 3in/50 DP guns, one single 40mm Bofors AA gun, two single 20mm AA guns, one six-barreled Terne III ASW mortar, two triple 324mm ASW torpedo tubes. Slatted to be replaced by a new construction frigate in 1996-2000. Originally built in the mid-1960s, these ships are considered to be badly worn and have reported problems with hull cracks.

2 Sleipner-class Frigates

Displacement of 790 tons. Speed of 22kts. Crew of 63. Armament consists of one single 3in/50 DP gun, one single 40mm Bofors AA gun, one six-barreled Terne III ASW mortar, two triple 324mm ASW torpedo tubes. In reserve and used as training ships.

Displacement of 140 tons. Speed of 36kts. Crew of 20. Armament consists of four single Penguin Mk1 SSM launchers, one single 40mm Bofors AA gun, four single 533mm torpedo tubes, two depth charge racks. Slatted for installaion of one twin Simbad SAM launcher in the 1993-95 time frame.

Displacement of 596 tons. Speed of 11kts. Crew of 9. Armament consists of two single 20mm AA guns, two twin 12.7mm HMGs, rails for 120 mines. Can carry 5 Leopard tanks or 180 troops.

2 Kvalsund-class utility landing craft
Displacement of 590 tons. Speed of 11kts. Crew of 10. Armament consists of two single 20mm AA guns, rails for up to 120 mines. Can carry 5 Leopard tanks or 180 troops.
