Forwarded is an 'adventure setup I used several years ago. I did a little 'expanding of the information, after I converted the file up. I set it in Tn for PCs just returned from Europe. Alternatively it could be an NPC group, but you would have to add 4 - 6 "salty combat leader type charachters.
Hope someone finds this useful.
Situation: Welcome home! Congratulations on the superb job you did in Europe with 3d Army. Due to your track record, you and your team have been assigned an important mission as the leadership of the security elements assigned to State Reconnaissance and Reconstruction Team 9 (SRRT-9).
Terrain orientation: GM has to fill this in depending on where he wants to play it from and to.
Friendly: Higher HQ: Once you step off, you will be working directly for the Civil Military Operations Center (CMOC). You will report on HF, at 0800 and 2000 each day. The SRRT log will be managed by the Civilian Leadership. No adjacent forces and very little chance of support beyond the Norfolk Enclave.
Enemy: There are no known declared hostile forces (Soviets, Mexicans or New America cells) along your line of march. You will almost certainly run into criminal gangs, bandits, and maybe anarchists. Remember these are American citizens; you need to be very sure of your targets before you engage. We are not naïve, and understand that certain types of criminals have to be dealt with.
Mission: SRRT-9 will
SRRT-9 is a is a Civil-Military Operation that brings together a range of civilian “experts” with a military escort with the assigned mission of reestablishing governmental control in a area defined by the GM. This is the main effort of the government and has been resourced to the best of the ability of MilGov. Specific taskers are too travel from the jump off point SW of Norfolk, to Nashville, Tn then on to Memphis. Along the route you are to assess the infrastructure, make contact with local governments and leaders, and provide radios to legitimate organizations to allow them to maintain contact and identify resources and requirements. Long term objectives are to allow for planning and prioritization efforts to reestablish security and functional economic relationships. Key enabling tasks are to assess infrastructure, gain information on the health and numbers of citizens, and reestablish contact with or help rebuild state and local governments.
SRRT-9 is to be led by the Senior Aide to Congressmen Kent (D – TN). He’s got a team of SMEs assigned to provide expert analysis and recommendations, including a doctor for health recommendations, a, communications expert (originally from the FAA, but serving as a Communications SME), a Civil Engineer, (Army Corps of Engineers), and an agriculture SME (Tn State Dept of Agriculture (DOA). They are provided 2 almost brand (WV1) new Ford Explorer 4x4 trucks and are equipped with high end “North Face” style camping gear.
The military escort is provided 2 Gun Humvees each with ring mount, gun shield and a short range radio. One Humvee has a winch. The other has a mounted High Frequency Long Range Radio. Each of these are later modeled “up-armored” trucks which are more heavily armored then the ones you are used to. They both have some miles (VW3) on them, and the one with the winch has obvious battle damage repair, but is functional. You are also provided two 6x6 5 ton trucks (one equipped with a ring mount with gun shield) both of these have seen better days but they are the best available (VW5). You get one 1.5 ton cargo trailer and one 400 gal fuel trailer. All the vehicles and the fuel trailer are topped off with diesel. You have 2 spare tires for Humvees and 2 for 5 tons, each explorer has a spare tire mounted. The Humvees and trucks each have a pioneer tool kit (axe, shovel, pick)
Weapons: 1 .50 HMG (600 rds), one Mk-19 (150 rds), one M-60 (1000rds), 2 LAW rockets, a case of 36 frag grenades, a case of 40# of C-4, a 500’ roll of det cord, 10 electric blasting caps and a basic demo kit. 300 rounds for each 5.56mm or 7.62 NATO rifle, and 100 rounds for each 12ga, .45 or 9mm pistol/SMG/shotgun used by the recruits or PCs. There is no ammo for anything more exotic, including 40mm grenades.
Equipment: Chainsaw, mechanics tool kit, bolt cutters, a coleman propane stove with 3 15 lb cylinders of fuel (be careful where you stow those), a Platoon Kitchen Kit (a few pots and pans, spatula, tongs…) 10 5 gallon plastic buckets with lids to carry water, 2 x handpump waterfilters.
Rations: In addition to the limited number of MRE-Es, you will be issued 30 days worth of B-Rations for the total patrol. You are provided a total of 10 cases of MRE-E (MRE-Expedients) each case is a large cardboard box with 12 smaller cardboard boxes designed to provide a soldier with 2000 calories to sustain him for a day. Each contains two “entrees” in foil pouches (stuff like beans and rice, chili, they are decent but have very little meat) a foil package of ‘velveta like cheese, hardtack breads, a tea bag and small package of ‘preserves.’ They are not as good as old MREs, but you have certainly eaten worse. These are only to be used in emergency situations when you cannot cook. Most often you are expected to cook meals out of B Rations, which mostly consists of ‘bulk supplies of oatmeal, dried beans and vegetables, rice, a small amount of beef jerky, dried fruit, and nuts.
In addition to all equipment you are assigned 8 brand new privates. All of them volunteered, though several of them were recruited out of refugee camps or to get their families fed, and given six weeks of basic training. This training covered the basics of squad level tactics. They all qualified with the M16 rifle (firing a grand total of 50 rounds). They practiced with dummy grenades and ran through battle drills with M60s and .50 cals, but due to ammo scarcity, each recruit company only got to see a few bursts from each of the of heavier weapons fired. None of your recruits have fired any military weapons heavier then the M16 or handled a live grenade. In general, they have been underfed and are still scrawny, while they are all young, 18 – 21, many of them have been through hell over the last few years and some of them have been in fights.
Equipment: Each soldier has been issued two sets of uniforms, most don’t fit well, one patrol cap, one ‘boony hat, one set of boots, five sets of socks and scivies, a Kevlar helmet, load bearing vest with 2 canteens, a ‘butt-pack’, a ‘alice pack’ with poncho and poncho liner, a mess kit (new manufacture) and a duffle bag. Each is armed with an M-16A2 rifle with 4 magazines and bayonet. No body armor is available: “but this is not supposed to be an offensive mission.” This same equipment load out is available for the PCs.
David Renew: The biggest of the recruits, at 6’2”, he’s strong and has a decent sense of right from wrong, and wants to help. He and his dad and brothers hunted deer pre-war and since. He has good observation skills and would likely make a good point man. (Rifle 3)
John Smith: Very smart kid, he’s a computer and electronic whiz. Not in great shape physically, he was ‘heavy’ before the war, then was starved. He’s got poor endurance. Will make a good mechanic and radio operator.
Steve Lake: Small and scrawny, he looks 14, but is 19. He’s funny and artistic. He has good intentions, will work hard, though he will be challenged to literally carry is share of the load, and wants to be part of the team and the reconstruction efforts. He is likely to freeze in a fire fight.
Regina Delcruz: A cute Latino, with an attitude, she wants everyone to believe she’s tougher than all the guys. She will go out of her way to carry her load. An incident that is likely to occur the second week is that the unit is awakened by Regina beating up Mike Lace.
Kate Tilley: She’s a pretty blond. That was not always a welcome thing during two years in displaced persons camps. She’s got “some issues” resulting from that, and she will try and “get close” to a powerful PC for security, lots of potential role playing issues with that. She is very calm and will become very good as a driver and radio operator.
Terry Thompson: Is a tall thin blond kid with severe acme. He’s got a common law wife and a 2 year old boy. Average strength and endurance, and in most other ways.
Mike Jones: The fastest runner and best shot of the whole group. He was a Florida State Freshman baseball player when the war started. He will prove to be ‘exceptional grenade thrower.’
Mike Lace: Appears to be a fairly average guy. Will “kiss up” to the PCs and other authority figures, and try to gain favor. He’s mean, petty and selfish. Though no one knows it, he’s both murdered and raped since the world went to hell. If he thinks no one is looking, he will ditch work, fall asleep on watch, and try to take advantage of any female he has the ability to get alone or worse yet be in a position of authority.
Congressional Aid Kevin Lumar, 36, 6’, 170 blond haired, blue eyed. Congressmen Kent’s senior aide. Kevin is working hard to continue to improve his name. His primary motivation is fame, which he plans to work into fortune. He will claim the glory for anything this team does, while trying to assign blame for anything to someone else, most likely one of the soldiers assigned to the security detail. He’s a womanizer and will try and bed Pvt Kate Tilley (who will not be positively inclined, gravitating toward a more powerful combatant), Dr Kim . Often found wearing a suit and tie, over ‘police style’ bullet proof vest, and 9mm pistol in shoulder holster. He’s been issued a M4 Carbine.
Dr Lauren Kim: 31 year old, 5’7, 130#, third generation Korean American. She is a competent doctor. She has became very good at diagnosing aliments that have become common. She is not good in high stress situations. She will be challenged in dealing with the level of devastation that the team is likely to encounter. Her Med Kit is well stocked. Uniquely, she has a small propane powered refrigerator that has live penicillin cultures. She will share this culture with other doctors.
Dr Debra Bolner. 51, Dr Bolner is an experience communications engineer, she was a key leader in the FAA. She is very good with repairing or establishing communications systems. She is a hard drinker, and drinks often, but never seems to be drunk. If she does not have booze she becomes mean. She carries a .380 pistol concealed in a fanny belt, which she always carries. She has a miniature collie dog, who she pampers, he’s spoiled, but is VERY well trained to not bark, unless giving alarm. She’s very effective at her job, but has a dark sense of humor.
Brian Olmstead: 45 year old, 5’10” 165# wild brown hair, Army Corps of Engineers. Very smart, somewhat naive, always seems surprised that not everyone understands engineering and physics to the same degree as he does. He does not always realize that his “easy fix” recommendations are beyond the ability of many local governments now. He’s motivated by trying to get things running again. He will be very focused on the TVA dam systems and the electrical power that can bring to the region.
Hunter Davies: 46 year old, 6’1’, thin with a ‘graying wild bikers beard.’ The teams Agriculture SME, he’s got a master degree in Agricultural Studies. Long time employee of the Tn State Dept of Agriculture (DOA). He was a hunter pre-war, and he has his hunting rifle with him, a Rem 700, .308 rifle. He has killed 2 marauders with it in the past. Blackhawk drop holster with a .45 pistol, with ‘ivory grips.’ He will prove very useful in helping locals establish ‘sustainable agriculture.’
Dave Reichman: 42 years old, 6’, powerfully built, used to be fat. The teams commerce SME, he’s trying to establish trade and commerce routes. He wants to become wealthy but is willing to work to establish this. He’s working his own projects at least as much as trying to establish commerce. He’s got a series of investors back in Norfolk, who he is trying to establish a trucking and distribution network. This requires security and fuel stations.
Cargo: The SRRT has been issued a veritable treasure trove of materials that are designed to help reestablish communications, infrastructure and stability.
Packed into a ‘quad-con (4’ x 4’ x 4’ Lockable fiberglass shipping box) are 75 High Frequency radios. These are each 5 Kg each, and include a pre-made antenna that must be tuned. Each of these is equipped with a 16” x 16” solar panel on end of 50’ of cord, rechargeable battery and operators handbook.
Seed: Packed in blue plastic 55 gallon barrels, is literally seven tons of seed for wheat, corn, pinto beans, sorghum, squash, pumpkin, and various fruit trees. These are not intended for consumption but as seed for the spring planting. The basis for issue is that in general Mr Davies will want to issue 2# of seed for each person in a community. This will mean that they will need to determine how many people are in the community or invite them all to a specific location. Sufficient supply to issue the basis for farming for 5,000 people.
Books: The team has for distribution 1000 copies each of 4 soft sided books. Locally produced they have black and white line diagrams only: ‘Sustainable agriculture for Tennesseans’ a 170 page book. “practical projects for self sufficiency” a 56 page book, “Practical medical care”, 130 pages, and “The rule of Law in Tennessee”, a 130 page book, combining a good bit of MilGov propaganda, recommendations on how to use county governments as basis for law and security, including descriptions of how to organize Militia units.
Medical: Dr Kim has a quad con with 500# of medicinal. Most of them are very basic, but they will undoubtedly save many lives in the current era. Aspirin, basic antibiotics and sulfa drugs.
Adventure hooks.
- The vehicles, weapons and cargo of SRRT-9 are incredibly valuable in the current age. Many groups would love to get their hands on the supplies.
- Other groups do not want to see the reestablishment of the rule of law, it’s not good for their business. They will openly oppose SRRT-9s activities: the group is likely to encounter ambush, sniper fire, direct attack against a encampment, direct attack against a town center while they are meeting with key leaders. Attempt at theft of the vehicles, either the 5 ton with seed or one of the gun trucks, would be very valuable.
- Just driving into the unknown with a varied group has many possibilities for adventure.
- Some towns will genuinely ‘welcome’ them in. One thing that I had was a town controlled by a ‘good-ole boy sheriff, welcome them in and provide them with a feast, including moonshine. Intent was to get them drunk, separate them and take the supplies and weapons.
Hope someone finds this useful.
