Has anyone ever done an orbat on the Japanese armed forces or a write up on Japan in Twilight 2000?

Japan has been a topic of discussion a few times but I can't recall seeing any write ups...I think most of the threads have been along the lines of "what do you think would have happened". There was a mini advebture in one of the last Challenge magazines to come out - iirc it was the result of a readers' competition.

That was "The rockets red glare" in Challenge #77
(Thanks again to WESWOOD, which made´em available for me!)

+1 -- I think Japan's role in the way is pretty vague, and (IIRC) the minimal references in 1st edition stuff and the brief blurb in the 2nd edition don't really match up very well. Then there's the 2300AD timeline, which has them intact enough to help France and its allies garrison the Middle East when the US goes home.
I tend to see them as kind of the France of the Pacific, though with a different set of strengths and weaknesses. Given that modern Japan is dependent on oil, food, and all sorts of other imports, I think circa 2000 if they are hanging on it is by trying to maintain enough stability off shore to allow for trade. Less an attempt at a new Greater East Asian Coprosperity Sphere and more a multilateral engagement with Australia, New Zealand, Taiwan (another question mark), South Korea and US forces there, and any clumps of stability on the Chinese mainland.
And they don't have much, troops-wise, to do it, though if they can keep a supply of raw materials coming in and aren't too badly nuked, a lot of their defense industry is local. I see a lot of merchant ships plying the Pacific who are more merchant/adventurers on the Viking model doing wary business and occasionally clashing with small dictatorships scattered on the islands and mainland from China, down through the Philipines and Indonesia, and perhaps as far west as what's left of India. (As well as Hawaii, Alaska, and the US/Canadian/Mexican Pacific coast, doing business with anyone over there with goods to barter, etc.)
No idea on the order of battle, except for a little bit that touches on my Alaska stuff, but I've thought on and off that it would be a pretty cool premise for a campaign to have the PCs be a core group of US troops recruited out of Korea (or maybe coming off convalescing in hospitals in Japan) to augment the ships troops on a semi-militarized Japanese merchantman. Add in a general reconnaissance mission for the DIA or CIA unknown to the Japanese captain to the equation, with the possibility of some more active cloak and dagger stuff from time to time, etc., and the nice way any sort of scenario can come out of the next port of call and it seems like it would have a lot of potential.
I think I've said it before on this forum that I don't think Japan escaped the Twilight War without much damage. Its just too important of a country for a whole load of reasons to not be targeted by nuclear weapons. Their military is also on the large size, particularly their naval and air forces.
I haven't yet done an overview of likely targets but there would be a lot. The US bases, the Japanese military bases, ports, airports, oil refineries and industrial war targets. I just couldn't see the Soviets allowing them to remain intact when there at war with the US, NATO, China and others. I think in Twilight 2000 the Japanese are actually fighting the Soviets over control over the Kuriles islands and Sakhalin Island, and I could easily see that fighting spreading over to Japans Hokkaido Island. At the very least I could see all sorts of naval actions and air strikes going round the sea and coastline of Japan in the Twilight War, as well as quite a few Soviet nuclear/EMP strikes to knock it out of the war and deny its facilities to America.

Yes, I have done an orbat. The orbat for the Ground Self-Defense Force is done, but I ran into problems with the orbats for Maritime Self-Defense Force and Air Self-Defense Force, due to lack of material available.

Do you want to post up that orbat as I'd like to have a look at it. I had done a Japanese Army orbat but it was on my old labtop which died just before Christmas when the hardrive finally collapsed on it. I hadn't copied on to memory disk so I haven't got it on my other labtops. I do have a fair bit of information about the Japanese air and naval forces from the 1980's to early 1990's period but there in books. I'm in America at the moment and wont be back in Ireland till the end of next month so I can't have a look at them. But there is a fair bit of information online about the airforce and navy. Even wikipedia can be quite helpfull for ship classes.

I haven't read through every T2K sourcebook I have in great detail. Which one is that invasion in?

Here are the Orbats, I have also included some preliminary info about the Red Army of Japan. As for were are the details about the Soviet invade Hokkaido are listed; I can't remember where I read it, but I know it was not cannon. Right now I have a project due for my Scout Group; which I lead, but once that is done I will look though my back issues of Challenge Magazine and see what I can find.
Those Orbats looks good to use in a future article about Japan. I'd like to give one a go in the future but I think working out Japans level of participation in the Twlight War and exactly how much nuclear or conventional damage it took would cause a few arguments.

If I recall correctly the Traveller 2300 timeline indicated much of the Japanes merchant fleet survives the war and they dominate trade for some time in the Pacific. I never agreed with that point of view but if you take it as canon source then it give room to biuld lots of oppurtinities for interactions with Japanese post 2000.

Actually that COULD reconcile the two editions. Japan gets badly hit but the merchant marine fleet is mainly at sea. This leads to a number of the captains operating as merchant-owners of the ships trading extensively. These captains effectively form new clans over an extended area of the Pacific islands. Only later do they come together to recreate a Japanese nation. Now this could make a nice campaign.

This some info and basic outline for the Japanese Red Army:
Japanese Red Army
The Japanese Red Army (JRA) are a Marxist militant group founded by Fusako Shigenobu early in 1971 in Lebanon. It sometimes called itself Arab-JRA after the Lod airport massacre. The JRA's stated goals were to overthrow the Japanese government and monarchy and to start a world revolution. Shigenobu had been a leading member of the Red Army Faction (Sekigun-ha) in Japan, whose roots lay in the militant new-left Communist League. Advocating imminent revolution, they set up their own group, declaring war on the state in September 1969. The police arrested many of them very soon, its founder and intellectual leader Takaya Shiomi was in jail in 1970. The Sekigun lost about 200 members and the very few left merged with a Maoist group to form the Rengo Sekigun or United Red Army in July, 1971. This group grew notable because its members slaughtered twelve of their own in its training camp hideout in the Mount Haruna in the winter of that year. A weeklong siege by hundreds of police, the Asama-Sanso incident ended this fiasco. The Red Army in Japan was finished. Fusako Shigenobu had left Japan with only a handful of dedicated people, but her group is said to have had about 40 members at its height and was from the Lod airport massacre on one of the best-known armed leftist groups in the world. The Japanese Red Army, Nihon Sekigun from 1971 had very close ties to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). By 1972 the United Red Army in Japan was finished and the Shigenobu group dependent on the PFLP for financing, training and weaponry.

What happens to Japan depends on what version of Twilight 2000 you have - in the first edition they get away untouched from the war - there is no mention of them being hit at all, in fact in the Soviet Vehicles Guide it specifically mentions how that most of the information gathered on the Soviets came from a defecting Soviet General in August of 2000 and from information gathered by the Japanese during their efforts to find trading partners among the nations that rose from the Soviet Union after the war.
Remember that was when it had the Russians having significant forces in Vietnam during the war and even in 2000 still.
2300AD was developed using that information so you could see why it has Japan as the France of the Pacific.
Now if you go to the revised timeline edition of Twilight 2000 you now have the Russians fighting the Japanese for Sakhalin and islands the Soviets took from them at the end of WWII (Kuriles) and that front that was in Vietnam is now in Sakhalin and the Kuriles.
The specific reference in the 2nd edition is as follows:
Japan: The war with the Soviets over Sakhalin Island and the Kuriles brought Japan under nuclear attack in late 1997. Japanese industry was heavily damaged, and Tokyo was all but destroyed. Martial law was neverformally proclaimed, but most areas are governed by military officers who hold both civil and military positions. Each community counts as insular or independent, although they all are nominally under central control. The large cities are devastated, mostly from the civil unrest that followed the breakdown of the world economy and the cessation of foreign imports.
Now that Japan is the one that Rockets Red Glare was written for in the last issue of Challenge. So what you see in that magazine depends on what edition you are using and what timeline. If you are using the original then the article doesnt apply.

By the way there is one ship that could be added to the Japanese forces that you did overlook
The Battleship Mikasa was restored back in the 1950's and 60's and from what I understand her boilers and guns are still operational. Her boilers still burn coal from what I understand so the fuel oil situtation wouldnt apply to her - and with the current situation in the Pacific any big gun ship like her, even as old as she is, would be a significant addition to a navy.
If Japanese industry is still intact they could even make new shells for her main guns.

Sorry to revive a dead thread but...has anyone put together a list of the nuclear targets in Japan?
My team was trying to come up with countries that might have NOT been blasted by EMP to help counter the lack of high quality communication gear.
Even though I do not generally support the whole "The entire US is blasted by EMP and nothing works" theory canon seems to imply...

Targets in Japan = Tokyo + anywhere there was a US base or concentration of forces.

Plus refineries.

I can see refineries for oil producing nations but...Japan doesnt have its own oil reserves does it?
Looks like around 8 refineries depending on the data you use...

Both versions are pretty clear that refineries get hammered across the globe, even where there is no production.
France has almost no domestic production and even thought they are a nuclear power the Sovs still decided to hit them.

True.

A few places that might be potential targets...just suggestions...there's no canon list that I'm aware of, so it's pretty much up to each individual GM how they want to play it.
Mitsubishi Aerospace, Nagoya and Komaki (Manufactures licence built F15's and F2's (Japanese F16 variant))
Various shipbuilding facilities e.g. Nagasaki, Kobe (Japan was a major shipbuilder in the late 80's, building tankers, warships, container ships, etc)
Space Launch Facilities (I just had a quick skim of those but they all seem to have been operational in the late 90's)

All merchant shipping is very vulnerable to pirates today, Japanese ships might have a few clubs. A commerce raider or raiders would be very disruptive. N. Korea might lob something that would disrupt 3C.

here are some -
Central America - Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala
South America - Chile
Oceania - computers on many of the smaller island nations, Philliphines, Indonesian islands with no oil production, Papua New Guinea
Asia - Thailand (no nuke strikes per Cesspool of the Orient if I remember right)
Africa - Kenya (if the refinery was never nuked then neither was Mombasa), most countries with no oil refineries or only small ones
Europe - Switzerland, Monaco
