When the 278th had to be built up in Germany after it arrived, the canon mentioned that they requisitioned both armored cars from the US Air Force and civilian vehicles.
However after looking thru the Jane's I have there are some ideas there that would be perfect for the 278th
For instance
Thyssen Condor APC - 4 x 4 wheeled APC - exported to several countries - for the Malaysians they built a variant with a 20mm cannon - that would make an excellent vehicle for a cavalry unit - it was a private venture vehicle for export originally
Thyssen 170 APC - it was used in Germany by the German Border Guard - it can be armed with anything from a 7.62mm gun to a 25mm gun to a mount with four ATGMS
Thyssen Henschel TH 444 APC - it was an armored 4x4 that could be armed with a 7.62mm MG that was ready for production in 1996 - again an excellent candidate for the 278th
As usual, you can find details on these vehicles at the pre-eminent Twilight 2000 vehicle site - http://www.pmulcahy.com/wheeled_apcs/german_wheeled_apcs.htm
And of course from the NATO vehicle guide you have the Wiesel - again another great cav vehicle
