Helmet, Combat Vehicle Crewman Weight: 1.5kg
A padded helmet issued to vehicle crews. The CVC is fitted with a boom microphone and headphones for intra-vehicle and radio communication (the helmet plugs into the vehicle’s intercom system). A Kevlar shell is fitted that provides some head protection.

Helmet, PASGT Weight: 1.35kg
The helmet, better known as a “Fritz” or “K-Pot” is made with Dupont Kevlar, a synthetic fiber that is lighter and stronger than steel. It greatly resembles the helmets used by German forces throughout this century and provides the best level of cranial protection available. There is an elaborate internal suspension system of straps and padding, and a replaceable fabric camouflage cover.

Vest, Interceptor Body Armor Weight: 7.5kg
A replacement for the PASGT vest, the Interceptor is a marked advance over the earlier system. It consists of a flexible Kevlar vest with sufficient ballistic performance to stop fragments and projectiles up to 9mm, and front and back trauma plates capable of stopping repeated hits from 7.62mm rounds.

Vest, PASGT Weight: 9.1kg
This vest is made with Kevlar and is designed to protect the neck, shoulders and front and back. It is secured with Velcro closures. The vest is built up with dozens of layers of Kevlar running in different directions, and reinforced with ceramic plates at key points. This spreads out the impacting energy of a bullet or fragment over a wider area, thus preventing a potentially lethal penetration. It is designed to stop a 7.62mm round at short range. The bullet may knock you down, or even crack a rib (and it will definitely leave you severely bruised), but you will be alive. The greatest complaint about the vest is that it is torture in hot weather, since it does not “breathe”. It is normally worn only when close combat is expected.

Breaching Charge
A configured charge of plastic explosive designed to blow man-sized holes in walls. The charge is the size of a thick notebook, with a self-adhesive panel on one side and an adjustable chemical time fuse on the other. To operate the charge, the user peels the sheet of protective plastic film from the adhesive panel, places the charge at waist height, breaks the prescored fuse strip at the desired time delay (five to 60 seconds in five-second increments), pulls the primer and dives for cover.
Weight: 2kg Burst Radius: 20m
Packaging: 4 per case Package Weight: 12kg

Composition Four
Known as C-4, plastique or plastic explosive, this is the most commonly used demolitions material in the military today. Plastique has the consistency of clay and can be molded into any shape. A pancake of plastic explosives can be wrapped around a turbine shaft to sabotage it or flattened against armor plate to punch a hole through it. A long strip of C-4 can be used to outline a man-sized area on the hull of an aircraft, or around a doorknob to blast an entry or open the lock. Plastic explosives are absolutely stable. They will not explode when dropped, jarred, struck or exposed to flame.

Dynamite
Used mostly as an industrial explosive, and may be found at quarries or other blasting sites. It is relatively stable but may explode when exposed to fire or struck with a metal implement. A single stick may cut into as many as seven pieces. One-seventh of a stick has a relative strength of 0.1 unit of C-4.

The M-112 demolition block consists of 0.563kg of Composition-4 packed in a Mylar-film container with pressure-sensitive adhesive tape on one surface. The tape is protected by a peelable paper cover. The M-112 block is used primarily for cutting and breaching in all types of demolition work. Because of its moldability and high brisance, the charge is ideally suited for cutting irregularly shaped targets such as steel. The adhesive backing allows the charge to be attached to any relatively flat, clean, dry surface that is above freezing point. One block will blast a hole 30cm square through 10mm armor plate or a 0.6m diameter hole through a 10cm thick rock or concrete wall.
Weight: 0.563kg Burst Radius: 6.75m
Packaging: 30 per case Package Weight: 21.6kg

M-118 C-4 Demolition Block
The M-118 demolition block, or sheet explosive, is a block of four 0.227kg sheets of Composition-4 packed in a plastic envelope. Each sheet of the plastic explosive has a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape attached to one surface. The M-118 block is designed as a cutting charge especially to be used against steel targets. The sheets of explosive can be quickly attached to irregular and curved surfaces and is easily cut to any desired dimensions.
Weight: 0.90kg Burst Radius: 10.79kg
Packaging: 20 per case Package Weight: 25.8kg

M-150 Penetration Augmented Munition
This is a lightweight, man-portable demolition device. It is only 0.838m in length and can be emplaced by one person. The primary use of this munition is against reinforced concrete bridge supports, piers, walls, and abutments. The device is designed to be easily carried in a rucksack or attached to the soldier’s LBE without restricting his ability to walk, climb, rappel, or fast rope. Any standard detonation device can ignite it. The PAM is hung against the target. The warhead consists of a forward charge, which cuts any rebar; a hole-drilling charge, which forms a hole in the target; and a follow-through charge, which is propelled to the bottom of the hole it detonates. The explosion fractures the structure and results in the loss of at least 75 percent of the load-bearing capability. Two operators with two PAM units (32kg) can set the devices on a bridge and be ready to exfil within two minutes. Normally, this type of operation would require twelve men, using 200kg of M-112 demolition blocks and a time of fifteen minutes per man.
Weight: 15.876kg Burst Radius: 163m
Packaging: 2 per case Package Weight: 40kg

M-183 Demolition Charge
A canvas satchel containing 16, M-112 C-4 blocks and 4 M-15 priming assemblies. The priming assemblies are 2 meters of primercord with a blasting cap at each end. The charge will blast a 2-meter diameter hole 1 meter of concrete. It will also blast a 0.6-meter hole through 76mm of steel.

SIGHTS

AN/GVS-5 Laser Rangefinder Weight: 2.3kg
This device resembles a pair of binoculars. It is used to determine the range to a target, usually to verify the location of targets for artillery or air strikes. It is an x8 power, effective out to 9km. The operator must have a clear LOS to the target; smoke or dust can degrade the range.

AN/PAQ-4C Infrared Aiming Light Weight: 0.3kg
This device produces a target-marking beam similar to that of a standard laser sight---except that it is infrared and thus invisible to the naked eye. The targeting dot can only be seen through NVGs; as a result, it is effective only for night combat.

AN/PAS-7 Thermal Viewer Weight: 5kg
A viewer that “sees” heat, either the presence or lack of it. It can see a warm body hiding in a tree or a cold vehicle hidden under brush. It can spot a man at four hundred meters or a running vehicle at three kilometers. It is able to penetrate fog, rain or smoke. It has a magnification of x4.5 and a battery life of 48 hours.

AN/PVS-4 Individual Weapon Night Sight Weight: 1.8kg
This is a portable sight used for observation and aimed fire of weapons at night. It uses passive light amplification to provide the user with a clear view of the field of fire. It provides clear vision out to 365m.

AN/PVS-7B Night Vision Goggles, NVGs Weight: 0.7kg
This device has a single viewing tube instead of the standard inocular form of earlier versions. Prisms provide simulated binocular vision, but vision is limited to a 40° arc in front of the user. This model works on the principle of light amplification; it doesn’t emit infrared radiation that could reveal the wearer to other night-vision gear. It also incorporates photo-reactive light dampening to protect the wearer against the blinding effects of muzzle flashes. It will function continuously for 12 hours on its battery.

AN/PAS-13(V)2 Weight: 2kg
The US military AN/PAS-13(V)2 TWS. This sight can identify targets at a range of 690 meters (down to telling what type of uniform is worn, type of weapon carried, whether the target has a mustache, etc.) and larger objects such as vehicles and buildings at a range of 1,000 meters. This device has crosshairs to facilitate aiming. Glass and Plexiglas are opaque to the TWS, and appear black.

RADIO
AN/PRC-112A Secure Transponder Weight: 0.8kg
This is more of a survival radio than anything else; it only operates on eight frequencies on the UHF/AM band, including the international emergency band. There is a newer version, the GPS-112, which adds a GPS receiver. Short range is 4km. Issued to Recon and MARS Teams.

AN/PRC-119 SINGCARS Secure Manpack Radio Weight: 7.5kg
This unit has a built-in frequency-hopping unit. Any radio can communicate with any other by means of a special frequency-hopping unit that changes frequencies (all 2,300 of them) at 30-second intervals so that it is almost impossible to listen in on a conversation for any length of time. However, both radios must be on the same link to be able to communicate with each other. The PRC-119 can also be used as a modem (transmitting at 16 kphs). This unit may also be combined with a Vinson voice scrambler for maximum security. The radio has a maximum range of about 8km as a manpack radio. Standard Issue Project radio.

AN/PSC-5 Manpack/Vehicular SATCOM Terminal Weight: 7.5kg
This device allows communications via satellites in orbit. Normal transmission mode is voice, but a keyboard may be attached for text, as can a fax machine or a computer. The device may be used as a regular radio, with a short range of 18km. It may also be used as a beacon for rescue or other homing operations. Issued to MARS, Recon, Science and Communications Teams.

AN/VRC-87C SINGCARS Secure Vehicular Radio Weight: 12kg
This radio has a short range of 50km from a vehicle mount only. The unit is otherwise similar in function to the AN/PRC-119 described
above. Issued to MARS and Recon Teams.

Caracal (PRM 4740A) Secure Hand Radio Weight: 1kg
Used by special operations units, these are the smallest radios to incorporate frequency-hopping technology. Up to 10 channels may be reprogrammed for quick frequency changing. Also fitted with a remote ear receiver and a throat microphone. Designed to allow team members to communicate without having to remove the radio from its holster.

Cellular Telephone Weight: 1kg
A portable cellular phone allowing access to cellular communications networks. A special chip is inserted that allows Project cellular phones to access any existing cellular network.

Communications-Electronics Operations Instructions Weight: Negligible
The CEOI is a small paper book containing assigned radio frequencies, times for changing frequencies, alternate frequencies in case one is compromised, team callsigns, prearranged call times, passwords and countersigns, cipher sheets for encrypting and decrypting messages and visual signals for contacting aircraft if radio communications is out. CEOIs are vital to the mission; they are also classified material which must not be mislaid. CEOIs are printed on highly flammable paper so that they can be easily burned to prevent capture; they can also be chewed to illegibility in seconds.

Portable Facsimile Machine Weight: 6kg
Connected to a radio, this enables recon photos, situation maps and other reports to be sent and received by teams in the field.

RC-292 Antenna System Weight: 10kg
This is a 10-meter tall antenna. Any radio attached to this antenna has its broadcast range tripled in normal mode or multiplied by six in hi-power---and highly detectable---mode. The antenna is non-mobile and takes one man-hour to assemble (i.e., one man takes one hour, two men take one-half hour, four men take one-quarter hour, etc.). In addition, it takes one-man half-hour to disassemble. The antenna broadcasts in 360° for purposes of reception and detection.

RADARS
AN/GRR-17-2 Ground Surveillance Radar Weight: 32kg
This is a very advanced, ground-based surveillance radar system. The unit consists of three pieces; the antenna, the power unit and the radar receiver-transmitter. The unit is capable of picking up the motion of a ground vehicle at 10 kilometers, an aircraft at 25 kilometers, or a man at four kilometers. The weight of the antenna is 10kg, the power unit is 12kg and the radar receiver-transmitter is 10kg. Normally issued to MARS and Recon Teams.

SURVEILLANCE
AN/PRD-303/SV Surveillance System Weight: 10.8kg
A small motion sensor that covers a 120° covered arc. It detects the motion of solid objects between one and two meters off the ground. Up to ten PRD-303/Ss can be hooked into a PRD-303/V. Effective range of the sensor is about 250 meters in open terrain. Internal batteries provide up to twelve hours of operation.

Bullhorn Weight: 3kg
Makes voices distinctly audible at 300 meters and indistinctly audible at 600 meters. Powered from internalbatteries (rechargeable).

Camcorder (SONY PC5) Weight: 0.4kg
An electronic recorder of audio and visual images, either as single frames or sequential motion pictures, stored on digital mini-cassettes or flash memory sticks. Each flash card can hold 1650 images or 7 minutes of video. Each tape can record for 80 minutes at SP quality. Comes with active IR emitter for low-light use up to 3m range, internal and external microphone (internal microphone is less sensitive), extensive onboard editing software.

Digital Camera Weight: 0.5kg
An electronic recorder of visual images, either as single frames or sequential motion pictures, stored on standard computer 5.25-in disks. Each disk can hold about 300 images. Features a x100 zoom lens, low-light capability and remote control.

NAVIGATION
AN/PSN-11 Precision Lightweight GPS Receiver (PLGR) Weight: 1.4kg
This is a small handheld GPS receiver that features selective availability/antispoofing and antijam capability. It provides precise positioning and timing solutions based upon signals received from the GPS satellite constellation. It is a five-channel receiver, capable of Precision Code (P-Code) and Y-Code (encrypted P-Code) reception. Positioning solutions can be displayed in latitude/longitude, military grid reference system, Universal Transverse Mercator, British National Grid or Irish Transverse Mercator Grid coordinates. It contains 49 map datums, and can be programmed to support navigation. The receiver has a built-in test feature, and is night-vision goggle compatible. The “Plugger” is accurate to within 10 meters.

Advanced MedKit Weight: 0.1kg
This kit consists of a single drug injector that is preloaded with Nanobots. These nanobots are programmed to help the immune system against biohazards and common viruses. They also speed the healing of broken bones and blood vessels (by 50%), and normal tissue healing (by 25%). Internal organs (liver, kidneys, lungs, etc.) are unaffected, since the nanobots aren’t complex enough to handle injuries to those areas.

The drawback to this kit is that there is a chance (1 in 50) of the victim being allergic to the nanobots. Their immune system will react to the nanobots and attack them to the exclusion of all else. Symptoms include extremely high fever within six hours of the injection, rashes over most of the body, extreme vomiting, and extreme dizziness leading to death within 48 hours. There is a special nanobot removal drug which, if given within two hours of the first symptoms, will terminate the allergic reaction and kill the nanobots. The drug however, leaves the immune system totally depleted for up to 40 days. The patient must be kept within a totally sterile environment throughout this period.

All Project field personnel have been tested to insure that they are not allergic to the nanobots. Team medics are issued two injector for every team member (labeled with their name).

Expanded NBC Independent Field Kit Weight: 20kg
This kit consists of two complete environment units and a smallish, fully automated “receptor”. Soil, water and other “solid” samples are fed into the receptor and, within five minutes, an amazing amount of data can be obtained from the sample. When connected to a computer, it will report the presence in the samples of radioactivity and its intensity, any extraordinary chemical contamination and any unusual biological presences. It will also report the relative lethality of radiological or chemical contamination and assign a “best guess” of any biological contamination found.

In depth analysis of chemical or biological specimens by a lab will still be necessary to acquire precise information. This kit is not a magic box. It is an expanded version of the standard issue NBC kit that is keyed to look for particular traces and report on certain anomalies. Without a computer and its database, it will simply provide a readout of certain percentages of various chemical, radiological and biological measurements. Even with the computer, its “guesses” may well be wrong and they are limited to checks for expected contamination caused by The War. It may indicate that a water sample is clean when in fact, it is contaminated with giardia. This is because it is not looking for this infestation since it is unlikely that this usually non-fatal bacteria would be used as a bio agent.

Geologic Sampling Field Kit Weight: 7kg
To the casual observer, this kit looks like a glorified rock-hound’s set up. It contains the tools and other paraphernalia needed to acquire mineral samples from their native environment. In addition, it has the necessary instruments for charting slope, dip, strike and the like for geologic formations. This includes a Brunton compass, strike and dip measuring equipment, etc. With this equipment, and the Survey Kit mentioned below, and the proper training, the user will be able to construct a geologic map of the area.

Meteorological Independent Field Kit Weight: 25kg
Within this kit are instruments which can be used to determine air, land and water temperatures, determine wind speed and direction, humidity, air pressure, rainfall amounts, and so on. To be used effectively, this kit must be set up somewhere and monitored. The gear cannot predict the weather, but information collected can be useful in formulating an “educated guess”, especially with the help of a computer. As with everything else, training also helps. The kit is most useful in collecting a database on which later predictions can be based.

Soil Analysis Field Kit Weight: 5kg
This kit contains everything necessary to collect soil samples and prevent cross-contamination. There is a limited amount of analytic capability inherent to the kit, but in-depth results require the use of a lab. Included in the kit are soil-boring equipment, sample containers, a few chemicals for testing soil acidity and the like and sieves for separating soil materials.

Survey Independent Field Kit Weight: 20kg
This is a land surveyors outfit reduced to the bare essentials. An optic scope and tripod, “range” stakes and poles, plumb lines, chart paper, solar powered calculator, flags, targets and markers are included as well as a collapsible plane table. With this kit and a lot of time you could lay out a road, river system, dam, bridge site or what have you. With even more time you can make a fairly accurate map.

Tree Boring and Bio Sampling Field Kit Weight: 7kg
The “Tree Butcher’s” rig is designed to acquire live samples and keep them fresh for a reasonable period of time. It is just about useless without lab back-up. Equipment included in this kit are tree samplers of various sizes, specimen jars for samples of wood, bugs, beetles, leaves, needles, bark, etc., and a digital camera to take pictures.

Water Analysis Field Kit Weight: 3kg
This kit functions in the same way as the soil kit. It can tell you immediately whether or not a sample is fit to drink. However, anything more detailed (such as why it is not) requires a lab. Included in this kit are sealed containers for keeping samples, biological contamination testing equipment, and some simple chemicals for testing the chemical purity of the water.

Armbrust 300 Light Anti Armor Weapon
A German-designed weapon that is actually a recoilless shell launcher using a countermass to eliminate recoil. This allows the Armbrust to be fired within enclosed spaces (one of the very few launchers capable of doing so). The countermass design also traps all of the smoke and much of the noise (little louder than a pistol shot), thus making the detection of an Armbrust launch very difficult.

This is a recoilless weapon designed primarily for use against tanks, but can also be used in a variety of roles. The weapon consists of a rifled tube with a rear-mounted, up-rotating venturi, a sprung bipod-cum-shoulder rest, a pistol-grip firing mechanism and a forward handgrip. An open or telescopic sight can be fitted. The “Charlie-G” is normally operated from the shoulder. A round is loaded from the rear into the breech with the venturi open. Firing is mechanical by a hand-cocked, percussion-operated detonator located in a tube on the right side of the barrel. In addition, a two-pressure trigger and safety catch are provided. As with other multi-purpose systems, a variety of ammunition is manufactured. The main round is a HEAT projectile, but anti-personnel, smoke and illuminating rounds are also available. A newly designed “heavy” HEAT projectile has been placed in service, which allows greater armor penetration.

M-152 TOW II Anti Tank Guided Missile
TOW, which stands for Tube-launched, Optically-tracked, Wire-guided missile is perhaps the single most common ATGW in the world today. The basic mount is man-portable and capable of being spilt into four units. These are the tripod, launcher, electronic signals generator and the tracking optical sensor. The missile in its container is loaded into the launcher, and electrical connections are made through the container as it is loaded. The wings and control surfaces are folded at this stage but open on ejection. In flight, two wires, through which command signals are transmitted, unreel from the missile. So long as the operator tracks the target in his sight, automatic corrections are made by a sensor to keep the missile on the correct course, the operator does not have to make any range or lead calculations. The Project issue version is the TOW IIC, which can be set for direct or overhead attack.

If you want to get very up to date on demolitions, the military has been jettisoning the time fuse/det cord systems in recent years, in favor of shock tubes.

http://books.google.com/books?id=eTb7IoVTUwEC&pg=PA195&lpg=PA195&dq=shock+tube+demolition&source=bl&ots=fBWhfhPYrZ&sig=B8fVSeSwsLVgvHXZWjOUKO6tv-Y&hl=en&sa=X&ei=0xWmUpHqCcaGoQSkqoGYAw&ved=0CH4Q6AEwDg#v=onepage&q=shock%20tube%20demolition&f=false

Of course, there are many jolly uses for det cord that shock tubes can't perform (tree cutting for example).

That is a lot of great info, Dragoon500.

Something I would like to add to the mix. Something I have seen in games I have played or ran.

The shoebox.

In a lot of games, the GM allowed each player to bring something from "the past" into the game. It MUST fit into a shoebox.

I have seen all KINDS of strange memorabilia, odd knick-knacks, or thought out survival items. Some examples I have seen.

One guy's family actual owned a World Series championship ring from the 1969 Mets. It was in his shoebox.

Small fishing gear. Line, hooks, weights, bobbers, etc.
.22 revolver with 150 rounds of .22LR
Pipe, tobacco, lighter, pipe cleaners, etc. (one of my characters)
1 Pint of single malt scotch (now 150 years older)
OLD Family Bible (Names back to 1620's)
String of pearls from Great Grand Mother
St. Jude Medals
High School Class Ring
Football
Frisbee
Boy Scout compass
Car keys from first car

one guy went so far as to have some strands of hair from different family members.

It does pose an interesting question. What would YOU bring if you were part of TMP?

I've actualy used something like this in many of my games. The Personal Effects Satchel is a small gym bag capable of holding roughly 4kg of "stuff", although I tend to restrict what can go in (sorry that Thompson SMG and twelve 100 round drums that your great-grandfather left you, just won't fit), and I'm amused at what some people will try to bring along, like the family's uncut gem collection, or the gold coins that have hidden in the ole flour bin for "genertions".

I tend to place things like photos, favorite books on cd-rom.

Both my original campaign (run in the mid-Eighties) and my current campaign have a "personal effects box". In both cases we use a .50 cal can as the container:

it's sturdy and watertight
the dimensions are known, and can't be fudged
they're easy to get if you want a prop

Our current campaign has a page on these:

http://asmrb.pbworks.com/w/page/50149718/Morrow%20Project%20Personal%20Effects

EDIT: note that the current campaign is "classic setting", so nothing from after the Eighties is present.

Given the team members are giving up their lives to the project and that the project is stashing away millions of cubic feet of material, I allow my players to stash quite a bit of stuff.

However I put it in three increasing containers

One small shoe box size container in the bolthole.

One footlocker in their local nesting cache.

The equivalent of 6 duffel bags in the regional headquarters.

So if everything goes as plan they get the first one out of the box, the second one when they make a local base or that cache's material is recovered as a regional asset, and the last bunch when they complete a rotation and return to the regional base for R^4 (Rest and relaxation and refit and retraining).

stormlion1

We used a seventh 'extra' cache for personnel items that was buried near the Bolt Hole that allotted 4 feet by 4 feet per person for personnel items to be recovered later and from the start of the campaign we allowed individual's to bring a standard 2 foot toolbox sized box worth of personnel items along. This would be tied down on the back of vehicles while traveling but did allow for plenty of personnel items to be brought along. Spare magazines for my fathers Colt 1911 were in mine, but the rest was filled with books and a Walkman with plenty of tapes.
We start a new campaign in February using the new rules so I think the books and Walkman with tapes are out as I can find 'other' ways to fill the space that don't take up as much room but still allow me to have music and reading material.

Having the total of "Personal Equipment" take up more volume than the issued team equipment seems a bit odd.

Plus, if you have lots of personal stuff, I worry that even character generation will turn into a tech/equipment festival ... an issue the MP game is already prone to.

The oddity is that there was a need to store personnel effects when you were going to originally going to wake up in something like five years after the apocalypse! Of course the team that was put to sleep in the 70's will be in for a rude shock to discover 8-tracks and bell bottoms are long out of date even if they are personal effects. I understand needing something to latch onto though. What I never understood was the Morrow Project supposed to set up bases after the nukes fell and do good from there? travel about? If the plan was to set up a permanent base camp and operate from there personal effects make sense but I a team like a recon team was main job to travel about the amount of effects would be severely restricted.

I agree that personal effect should be limited. One Shoebox was it in my games.

Now as to bases, I think that you are correct that the Recon teams are the "travelling salesmen" of Morrow. They also look to see who needs what the most. Then Science teams and/or MARS could be dispatched to deal with larger problems.

Most of my games, the Recon Team is ALONE!!! What I noticed was the characters finding the first place that needed them, fixing what ever problem existed, then use that area as a base of operations. It seemed to make sense. You are 150+ YEARS out of sync with the plan.

I try to design the project teams so they will survive from a logistical perspective, even if a team wakes up 10 days after impacts. That is where the nesting cache concept comes from. Since there is going to be more room there than in the bolthole, I figured a footlocker sized cache seemed reasonable.

The larger cache at the regional base would probably never be accessible to players in a standard game (150+ years wakeup), but from a logistical perspective it works. Since most of my regional bases are based on mines, moving such material into the base would only require one half of one day's volume of the mine's average train traffic.

I can use the caches as a way to move players around. I also look at it as a bit of payback to honorable men and women who chose sacrifice literally everything. These sacrifices were made and in return the teams only got vague promises of support (which in the end were broken). So if the project has the space, I at least have them try to make a bit of recompense for what was given up.

I always wondered who's bright idea it was to issue berets of all things? Its not exactly the best head gear in the field after all and its not like the Morrow Teams were trying to be mistaken for Green Berets with Morrow Project badges on their shoulders.
And on that note, where did the badge come from?

For our campaign, the berets are black, not green, so none of the (somewhat foolish) freaking-out featured in the Ruins of Chicago.

Team members have helmets to wear when operating vehicles; and for the most recent five-player team, every character stashed some alternate hat in their personal effects box. The amused comment was, "You each received your beret at the end of training, and wore it once, for the group photo."

The badges were done in black-enameled, gold-plated brass, and look fairly good if we do say. I'm gonna send some to Chris Garland, so if you're nice to him ...

Got my own Beret and hated wearing the thing. I noticed everyone above the rank of Tech Sergeant was going bald and the only reason I could think of why was those berets. Preferred my watch cap honestly. Its warmer to wear!

The choice was probably between beret or something like the Vietnam-era fatigue cap.

Third place: a boonie hat. Besides the beret and the CVC helmet, each team member gets their "individual cold weather kit" in our current campaign, which includes a black knit watch cap.

Would have figured a baseball cap would have been the way to go or possibly the boonie cap.

Ah, well, berets are shown in several of the original MP publications. If the US Army can choose berets, so can the (military-industrial) Morrow Project, I suppose.

Especially in the early-to-mid Eighties, when "military beret" has an association with tough guys (Airborne, Special Forces, paratroopers in other countries).

It's certainly a decision that can be changed by any referee/PD for their own campaign of course. If you feel the Project should issue Montana hats, or toques, or leather Snoopy helmets ... go for it.

Oh, I am not faulting the berets themselves. It just seems like an odd piece of equipment to issue to Morrow Teams, especially ones that are expected to awaken only three years after a nuclear war. Morrow Teams equipment runs the gamut of timeframes, M-14 rifles, M-16's, Uzi's. The old Vietnam era OD Green camo, probably the newer for the 80's BDU's, etc, etc. It all came down to when the team was frozen and if they were updated before the bombs fell.

I always wondered who's bright idea it was to issue berets of all things? Its not exactly the best head gear in the field after all and its not like the Morrow Teams were trying to be mistaken for Green Berets with Morrow Project badges on their shoulders.
And on that note, where did the badge come from?

Berets are awesome and were rather popular with some quite elite Allied units in ww2. As they helped soften the shape of the head thus making for a less clear target for a sniper or anyone with a rifle. Steel helmets of the time barely being able to keep out the rain.

Now the met police in the UK are considering issuing Sikh officers in firearms and riot units with turbans made from bullet resistant cloth.

So I can't see why a resist weave beret would be out of question. Perhaps with a protective inner liner as well.

In game terms perhaps enough to give a foolish team member shot in the head, a painful if not fatal lesson in being more common.

Indeed there's also a Russian company that makes self defence hats from tough material, with a solid rim. Kind of like an Oddjob baseball cap, so why not weaponise a beret. I believe when brawling in the days before DDay some soldier would use their berets as a sort of cosh. Holding one end and striking their fellow brawler with the heavy badge end.

Or of course a helmet.

http://asmrb.pbworks.com/f/1392762269/PASGT%20Helmet.JPG

That's a 1986 PASGT helmet, with a black fabric cover. Notice it has a webbing suspension; more recent helmets have foam pads replacing much of the webbing. Weight in medium size about 1.6 kg.

Oh, and it's size Large. It fits my 7-3/4 hat-size head nicely ... the extra-large size must be for about a hat size 8 or so.
