Check out the map of "Europe of the Peoples" in this article entitled What Europe Will Look Like If Its Separatists Get Their Way. It's one possible way that nation states might reemerge from the ashes of a post-WWIII Europe.

On a side note, I find it kind of odd how in a world where globalization is supposed to be breaking down traditional borders that there is also a movement towards subdividing nation states by ethnicity. Instead of the world becoming less insular, it seems like it's becoming more insular. I pity geography students today- I remember taking map quizzes in junior high and high school and Europe alone had at least a dozen fewer countries back then.
Well they didn't get their way in Scotland. BBC is predicting that no vote against Scottish independence has won the referendum by taking at least 55% of the vote. Been following it all night on BBC website. Its very interesting how only certain parts of Scotland really wanted independence in the end despite all the hype and anxiety leading up to the vote. Edinburgh rejected independence by 61% against it. It was all reminding me of Rainbow Six's Republic of Scotland article.

Yeah, fairly obvious who my not even thinly disguised nationalist leader was based on wasn't it?
Just to clarify re Edinburgh, No didn't actually win by 61% - 61.10% of the votes were in favour of no vs 38.90% in favour of yes, so I think that would mean No took Edinburgh by 22.2% but I have been up all night watching the news, so have been awake for twenty seven hours so you could be right...
Final result is 55.30% No / 44.70% Yes. That equates to just over 2 million votes for No vs just over 1.6 million for Yes.
(If you haven't been following it,Yes was a Vote for Independence, No was a vote to remain part of the United Kingdom)

So, in our time line, I guess we won't be starting the cattle raids next week? ;)

Funny looking at the map, in one of my timelines, I have France and Spain going to war after Spain cracks down on the Basque Autonomous Community and Basque Separatist poisons the water system of Barcelona. The terrorist came from the French Basque region and France refused to hand them over to Spain for trial. Spain staged a commando raid and seized the terrorist leading to war.

I did not embed as it is HUGE
edit found this description of the map here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_active_separatist_movements_in_Europe)
Map of active separatist movements in Europe. Red names indicate regions with movements that only claim greater autonomy within the actual state. Black names indicate regions with important secessionist movements, although both categories include moderate movements. The nations highlighted in colors are the territories claimed by the local nationalist groups, including areas out of the state's borders and cases of annexation to other states.

Change the names to Catalonia and have them attack Madrid....
Have to dig up my old timeline and see what else I predicted lol.
