Okay the big disaster has hit or is about to hit. You grab your survival gear and head for the hills.
Now do you bring your spouse and kids or is it every man for themselves?
(This was a question in one of my ethical morals class)

There are far too many variables for a simple answer.
Below IMO
From an evolutionary standpoint the survival of the species (or in the case of a smaller disaster your genes) should be paramount. This means that if your kids have a better chance without you, then giving them your equipment should be the choice as they have the greater chance of generating offspring in the long run.

Not married and no kids I lay claim to so I'm on my own. But if I did have any then yes, I would bring them along. When I marry or date I believe I am obligated to take care of them to the best of my ability. And that includes when SHTF.

At this point, I have spent too much of my life taking care of my wife and children to leave them behind. They are at least local to my home, closer than my dozen miles away.
My son at college, 600 miles away, is another story. He is also waaaaay more than capable of taking care of himself than my wife and teenage daughter.

See it all depends on the situation. My wife has medical limits of how long she can stay on her feet and she needs daily high doses of prescription pain medication. In a long term situation I would not place her odds of surviving as very good. Yet I think with my help she has an inner core of steel and may surprise me.
The kids are stepkids and I think the daughter would do good in a crisis while the ex-high school football player stepson got made into a wimp by his current long term girlfriend. I see no hope for him.

In my case it's my dogs. They're more important to me than any human being I can think of. They're survival is more important to me than my own survival. (And none of the "you can eat them too" crap. I know where I can download and disseminate viruses.:D)

I would die to save my wife and child. Obviously I'd try not to die but if that was the only way to save them I'd do it. What sort of a man would I be to do otherwise?

If I had them, yes! In the real world, my girlfriend is a yes. It says a lot about the person in the "No" category, perhaps this will inspire an NPC for that thread.

With the information given of course the answer is yes.

I would have no question. Of course you bring the significant other!!!
Now, an interesting side note. My Lady Friend, Lisa, lives about 10 minutes away from my house. Not too bad, but she works 20 minutes from house. If I am at work, add an additional 15-20 minutes for extraction.
My biggest pre-occupation these days is planning how to get her from either location back to here. If there is any kind of run up, not an issue. If SHTF...
Any ideas?

Congrats! A designated spot between points "A" and "B", perhaps the longest range FRS/GMRS hand radio and a possible dead drop with a simple series of codes. Add "rite in the rain" notebook, pen to the list. An smallish motor cycle for transport.

Congratulations. In game terms have you gained points by having a dependent or had to spend them to get an ally? ;-)
