I hear stories all the time about over aggressive web filtering all the time. Like library anti-pornography filters blocking "'breast' cancer" medical sites.

Since it was a one day thing I am assuming someone flipped on a filter that took out too much and it was noticed by the IT team or someone important complained.

Alternatively they monitor traffic and we flipped some keyword detector and then after a manual check someone approved it.

I have seen both happen in the past.

When public libraries upgraded their porn filters, I had to request "not porn" reviews for several sites by their IT people a few years back.

Considering the amount of informed defence related talk and information that is discussed on this site I would be very surprised if the spooks haven't been looking in from time to time. There are plenty of other forums about military history or technology out there, but how many other sites are there where you can get the complete load down of every nuclear target in every country in the world, or get detailed and accurate information on everything from an AK-47 to a nuclear submarine.

I would not be at all surprised to learn that some government agency or other signed up to a forum such as this to ask various questions - to use us as a free thinktank.
We might not have access to ALL the latest information but we sure can find a lot :D

I wouldn't be surprised -- many of the board's occupants are former or current military with practical, everyday experience in the military from all over the world. Most of the other occupants are former or current civilians who seem to have "meaty" professions.

Yes Canadian Army works for a meat packing plant, so if you need to know how much of hog can be processed into food please ask.

Or is there some other meaning

Actually, that could be useful info, in game or out. But sticking with in game, suppose the characters come into the possession of an animal that can be used for food, whether through trade, or given to them by as a reward for services rendered, or whatever. When they decide it is time to turn that animal into dinner, the players may want to know just how much meat do they have. I know my players would want this info. So, it would be good to be prepared.

Ideally, I'd like to know this information for several animals, mainly livestock, but it might be good to know for game animals as well. I realize there can be a variation in the sizes of animals in a species, but even a general range could be useful. Like: Holstein cattle can weigh from ___ to ___, and can yield ___ to ___ of edible meat. (I'm not sure if the type of cow makes a difference; do Guernseys weigh roughly the same as a Holstein?)

I've made attempts to find this information myself. Either I'm picking the wrong sites, or I'm failing to find the useful info in the sites. So anyway, any help in this would be appreciated. And, I'm sure others could make use of it as well.

The DIN filters are pretty aggressive toward games. Likely there were just enough keywords relating to games/gaming that it was filtered out. I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner. Just another way to try and improve productivity... yet Facebook isn't blocked somehow. I guess it's just too good of an intelligence source.

It happens all the time with us as they tweak security features.

MC and Navy and DOD sites are even blocked at work....which is funny since that's where we work! WTF!

As for animal processing and usable food.

I would think it depends on the work you wish to go through to prepare items. And, cultural norms.

As they say about hogs, "You can eat everything but the squeal."

As for cattle, the same could go for it as well. Boil the skin down and slow cook it. Break the bones for marrow, then boil them for the collagen and turn them into a jelly....various organs if cooked right away. I can see you using almost all.

Chicken and other fowl, remember some Asian cultures will use what we throw away, like the beaks and feet. Once we get away from our normal cultural fears or look outside the box and try their methods of cooking.

Remember, a lot of western food would have people from other cultures disguisted. Such things as "sausage, cheese, milk, headcheese, blood sausage/bread/soup, eyeball soup, scrapple American Hotdogs or US MREs even.

Eating and what one chooses to eat is often mind over matter, with phobias placed on us through our cultures and upbringing.
