View Full Version : About maps, plans and deck plans
Bon dia!!
I'm beginning this thread about maps and deck plans. I know that some of us make extensive use of Google image searcher, Google maps or Google Earth. They are excellent tools for any GM, but sometimes finding, editing or making a suitable map can be a time-consuming task. I think It would be good to have a small cache of maps already filtered by GM`s and players like us for their immediate use in our Twilight:2000 games . So, have you found/made any interesting map / deckplan to use and share? Plans of houses or military installations, deck plans of ships or planes, maps of cities and villages…
This one is from Close Combat game series. The number over some houses and buildings show their height in floors.

I really like this thread for any encounter you can just whip out one of these maps and off you go.
Keep em coming please.
If we had a library of these on hand to draw on ,a Gm could quicker get a chance encounter up an running .The maps are nice looking too.

Good looking maps for sure, for some reason its much better for the gamefeel than just some googled map IMHO:)
Thanks! Saint Google will provide.
The three following maps are from Close Combat series, too. I think they are specially suitable for any encounter set in a Mediterranean country. (The maps are from the Battle of the Ebro mod for Close Combat).
The outskirts of a village with a small crossing point over a river
290
A few houses in a Mediterranean countryside.
By the way, in some maps woods are only represented with their shadows. I think it was an option from the Close Combat games to allow a clear vision of your own units.

is that a rail line running parallell to the river on the left bank ? If so does it go into tunnels or is it meant to be interrupted ?

The village at the upper side of the map is the catalan village of Ascó, and the river is the Ebro (Ebre) .The rail line that runs parallel to the river goes into tunnels. The crossing point is a bridge made from boats (I don't know the proper english term, if anyone could inform me... :) ) by republican engineers in 1938.

Crop lands and a house, near a river.

From a "shooter", but good enough for an encounter.

Mmmmm... perhaps not post-apocalyptical enough. Well, change the cars for wrecks and some buildings for rubble. Or use it in Merc:2000 :)

Hunting for badgers iirc. The book reckoned they'd all be hunted out, if for no other reason than their selfishness in not sharing their fortune at having a shelter.
Subbrit is a great website, one I've recommended here in the past. Well worth a look.
Snow covered airport. Mmmmm, ok, there are some Ju-52 and He-111 wreckages, but just imagine they are from C-130 or An-26...:)

Two versions of the Air Force 1 from two different sites. It seems probably that this plane had survived the war.

I didn't know that some of them were still running. Interesting.
The two first are from the SS Jeremiah O'Brian. Simply change the museum for a cargo hold.
337
338
The file below is another side view of a Liberty Ship, the SS. Fort Halkett. It's another side view. Although it is redundant with the other file, I find that the silhouttes of the transported vehicles are a nice detail to get a quick idea about the relative dimensions of the cargo holds:
339
A big hangar with two planes inside (A P-3 Orion and a DC-8). Dimensions in feets.
340
A tropical beach with trenches and observation towers. Good for its use as a landing beach.
341
From Call of Duty. The assault and defense of the Pavlov building was one of the climatic (and hardest) scenes of the game.

Ei Tigger! I suppose you're talking about the maps of the PC game Close Combat (in any of its available version). The link is:
http://www.closecombatseries.net/CCS/
There are a lot of people working about mods for these games in this site, and the maps they produce are excellent and very suitable for their use in roleplaying games, as in our case. Sometimes you can save the image directly for the gallery, but you will have to do a little research here, because in the most number of cases the gallery window switch offs itself while trying to do the "save as..." Of course, you have always the option to do a "Print Page", but I’m afraid that the lost of quality will be too much important.
A small village with a some destroyed houses.
353
Interesting map, if you substitute the pair of soviets IL-2 for any present day STOL (Short take-off and landing) aircraft or any civilian light plane.
354
Some farms near a crossroad. As always, trees represented with their shadows.
As interesting detail, a phone line that diverges in the crossoad.

Well, you don't need to situate the house in the fantastic complex of the link. Instead, a lonely, apparently deserted house with a large, leveled and abandoned area, covered now by high grass can hide the hangar of this map... An old wind indicator could be the only clue that the plain in front of the house worked like an aerodrome.
And, after all, if you put there a conventional single-engine light aircraft, like the Cessna 152, with and air cooled engine, traditional carburetor and ignition by magneto you would have less mechanical complexity than in most of the present-day cars... Nice possibility.

Althought it is not strictly a map, it can be used in the briefing of a Merc / Twilight:2000 mission and it is easy to produce a game map from it.
396
Railway, fields, canals and houses.
397
Again, it's not a map. But it would be easy to produce a map from this drawing.

Ei! I'm not taking screenshoots directly for the game. Great part of the maps from Close Combat Series are from the photo gallery in the link below:
http://www.closecombatseries.net/CCS/
An outstanding web with great maps, though they were not originally designed for roleplaying.
I simply choose the more suitable to use in a roleplaying session. In a few cases (the map of Berlin 1945), I've erased the banners of the original image.
I've found a map from Colomby area, but take into account that it's from a mod and not from the original game:

I've kind of set my heart on building the Colomby map from the game - those two look kind of flat - I wanted some elevation plus the river with bridges and fords. So far I've fiddled with it several time but can't see any way to do it.
I want to print it out so I can grid the print and match up my terrain.
Oh, well - I'm sure I'll figure something out.
Thanks

There's a housing plan/suburb near Cleveland Ohio that actually has several hangars like this, and was designed so the main street through it could be closed off for use as a runway. Mmmm... interesting. What wargame are you playing?
The grid you need to use is an hexagonal one?
15mm figures - and I'm kind of going with Battleground Panzergrenadier or Battlefront rules (with option of Command Decision III). The first two have one stand equal a squad or section and one model equal to or three vehicles - CDIII is a step up with each stand representing a platoon.
So Battlefront US Armoured Infantry Company from Normandy would be:
1 Command stand + M3 Half track
9 Infantry stand (3 with bazooka)
3 LMG stands
6 M3 Half tracks
1 57mm AT gun + M3 half track
1 60mm mortar stand + M3 half track
Each stand has between 2 -5 figures depending upon taste. So my German MG42s have gunner, loader and spotter on each stand, while my rifle stands have two or three riflemen with the odd MP40 guy mixed in.
So think Flames of War but with a bit more historical accuracy and complexity and a few less figures on the table.
I used to play Command Decision (I). Well, more commonly I used to refeere Command Decision games... I asked you about the grid you use to translate the map to your representation of the terrain because I could add the grid directly to the Colomby map.
About Flames of War, last week I went with some of my friends to an area of Barcelona with an important concentation of stores devoted to wargames and roleplaying games. We discover that an old, tiny store we used to visit occasionally has been reformed and expanded. A true temple of vice with its own pub inside! Nearly one third of the store was full of "Flames of War" products. It seems that people of "Flames of War" are in a full commercial offensive.

Visio is usually part of Microsoft Office. I would not recommend purchasing Office ($$$) for this alone as other floor plan makers would give you more bang for the buck, but if you have access to the Office Install program it might be worth installing to take a look. Visio is one of Microsoft's more recent acquisitions so they have not had time to totally ruin it yet ;) .

First I grabbed a random city generator that is good by itself:
http://www.stargazersworld.com/2009/02/27/roleplaying-city-map-generator/
it's so quick and simple to use, and generates pretty good maps (exported to bmps etc) by itself. However, where it gets really good is that fractal mapper has a plugin which you can use to import a saved map from this programme. Once it's imported it looks better, and you can move things around etc. All I've done to the imported map is drag the roads and rivers out a touch, deleted a few dead-end roads from the random generation, and plopped in a building of my own (the barracks over the river) and the rubble etc. I selected a 20m (I think) hex-grid and we're good to go. I love it because I roll Village as a random encounter and while the pcs are discussing what they are doing I'm quickly generating a map, plus you can print a few for future use.
[edit] by the way the plugin works on the demo and I think the demo exports image files.

Also, any idea how I would show fields/crops on the map? I've tried to represent them by hashed/shaded regions but it doesn't look quite right. If anyone has some ideas, that would be great.
