One of the saying Combat Engineers have in the US: There is no problem that cannot be solved by a suitable application of explosives.

MajorPo 05-29-2008, 03:52 AM That farming with dynamite got me thinking, if the US wants to keep using cluster bombs in the face of mounting international pressure maybe they need a new marketing strategy. They could say cluster bombs are good for farming land cause they help break up the soil and remove pesky stumps and boulders. The nice wide distribution means no labor costs for laying out the dynamite either. :naughty:

weswood 05-29-2008, 09:25 PM I actually heard on the radio today that scientist are working on an environmentaly friendly bomb. Saving the enviroment is nice, and I'm a believer in more forest/jungle/wilderness areas, but.....wow, the mind boggles.

TiggerCCW UK 05-30-2008, 01:06 AM The fact that almost all military vehicles in Europe must now be emission compliant to the same standards as civilian vehicles seems a bit odd to me too - surely their suitability for the role is more important?

For most military vehicles (being diesel-powered, often high-horsepower and high-torque, and optimized for power), I don't even see how that would be possible, let alone desirable.
********************
TiggerCCW UK 05-30-2008, 01:15 PM Exactly my point. I don't think they're trying to apply it to armour yet, but its definitely the case for softskins.

sladethesniper 05-31-2008, 02:13 PM Because the West has become stricken with the disease of peace-itis...a major cultural mental illness
Major symptoms include: Talking it out, reduction of nationalism, outsourcing of defense, outsourcing of industry, reduction of individual freedoms for "security" and the "greater good", general squeamishness regarding violence, adopting a morally based/humanistic foreign policy, and believing that "Peace is The Way"...
Unless treated immediately, within a generation, barbarians show up, kill you and burn all remnants of your civilization and turn the survivors into slaves.
Good Luck!

I have to disagree somewhat.
Diesels are cleaner environmentally than petrol engines and use less fuel - though particluates and soot are a problem.
Most military vehicles are optimised for reliability over power. The thing is most of the military hardware is designed, trialled, redesigned, trialled again, made cheaper, argued about in government budget meetings, and is usually several years behind commercial stuff by the time it gets to the front line. It then sticks around for years and years.
It's inefficient and polluting because its old, and designed to be reliable and/or fixable by a half trained squaddie with a pocket knife.
The sort of electronic brains and lightweight bits and pieces that make modern engines so good aren't usually suitable for military use.
