Is this our personal playing style? Or the types of players we have recently GMed? Or the types of players we know?

I thought about that

one poll for players and one poll for gms

but I found it too much work - even though the result would be funny - inconsistencies etc...

so here u place your own style -

however there is no limits to answer the thread and explain othere players...if people dare hehe...cuz someone might do the same to you.

Thanks for the clarification.

I think 1 to 6 cover me but not necessarily all for one character. I vary my style depending on the setting, the crunchiness of the rules system, the GM's style and most importantly the other PCs in the campaign.

TiggerCCW UK 12-25-2008 11:05 AM

I went for method actor - I usually try and get under the skin of my characters as far as possible. Depending on the character most of the other options have applie at one time or another to me.

I prefer the method actor, too. Then, you can play with your character accordingly to the idea that you have in your head about it. And as GM I prefer that my players act method actors, too, though I recognize that everybody has certain tendencies depending on each one's personality. Every GM running games with a fixed group of players in different games is able to assign one adjective to each player that can be applied to all the characters of that players in all the games. I think that the other "papers" suggested in the poll involve fixes attitudes in the players, and it can be boring, especially if it's an old group used to play together without the always refreshing contribution of new blood. Method actors are much more entertaining and surprising than the tactician, power gamer, etc. Perhaps it's only and ideal, but they are the true salt of the ropleplaying and they can incentive the dynamic of an entire group.

throw me a couple of beers...

or a case, and i could easily be a method actor... ...or explaining actor is maybe more correct...

...but i guess i am most known as the suicidal gamer... ...specially if it is early in the morning, or "some" GM has thrown me "a special assignment"

maybe it is the eighties that has bitten itself to my head, as i can almost hear "take a chance" by abba, every time i "see" a dangerous move.

My "favourit" death has to be shotgun to the head... that gave me a painfull wakeup... always, and i mean ALWAYS check what the player you want to kill, is wearing...
...a couple of handy shotguns... not good...

...dont feel bad for the guy i try to kill (GENERAL PAIN), he deserved it so bad, he had my character tortured, that crazy loon. and ofcourse he had to tinker with some nuclear reactor, that ultimately made the whole party lose controll of its assets...

heard about social drinker, i am a social player... the game is fun, but it is all about the chemistry between the GM and the players themselves that is importent. whitout the fine people, with whom i play with, i would never travel 350km on a bus, i would just stay at home stroking my ps3 controller (no, I actually mean my ps3 controller)...

That reminds me of a joke (can't remember the comedian):

Somewhere in the world is the world's worst doctor...and someone has an appointment with him today.

EDIT: The comedian is, of course, the immortal George Carlin.

Generally I try to fall within the following types.

6 - the story teller
5 - the method actor
3 - the tactician
4 - the specialist
2 - the butt-kicker

One of the nice things about PBEM, is that I can get involved in a number of games, and can tailor characters to suit the game and the mood I'm in. While I'm not much for character background, although I've been working on it, I love setting background.

Haven't had a true butt-kicker in a while, fun to play when you can get away with one.

I try to think up a reason for my character's existance up to the time frame of the scenario. I like building the "history" of my character 'cause that gives me some reaoning behind his/her actions.

I think deep down most RPGers are really method actors. Action and treasure are fun, but getting into the shoes of another is just really cool.

MajorPo 08-02-2009 08:14 PM

I think mostly "the tactician" is the choice for me. It probably does vary a little between games. I also like to bring humour and depth to my characters, but underneath there's always careful scheming...

kota1342000 08-24-2010 08:41 PM

I think Ive jumped across a few of these choices WHEN I ACTUALLY GET TO PLAY INSTEAD OF GM!!! LOL
I like playing different roles and personality types from character to character, otherwise the PCs tend to seem like cardboard cutouts walking around a map board; might as well play Squad Leader. It also helps my GM skills since a GM needs to play all kinds of NPCs with some of them being somewhat convincing.

Not too long ago I got to play my first TRULY evil character for a Shadowrun game. Not a crazy guy- I mean someone who's made a conscious choice to do things that society has decided is wrong. Fun character to play. Another fun character was a D&D fighter who was determined to not kill if he could avoid it. THAT was interesting...not a pacifist, just against taking life. Try turning a siege into a huge friggin barfight.

Bumping this to give new members the opportunity to contribute.

bobcat 03-27-2011 02:55 PM

3, 4, and 9. granted my tactics keep almost getting me killed, but at least im special enough to survive.:D

Cpl. Kalkwarf 03-28-2011 06:11 AM

A bit of all of them, but 4, 5, 6 cover me most of the time.

Mahatatain 03-29-2011 07:46 AM

I picked other - I'm an organiser!

Legbreaker 03-29-2011 05:07 PM

I hadn't noticed... ;)

Other: My favorite PC at the moment is a sort of a toned down combination of butt-kicker, method actor, idiot, and homicidal PC. I find that I really enjoy playing combat-competent comic relief- a tough guy who doesn't take himself- or anything else, for that matter- too seriously. This hybrid archtype gives me lots of room to RP and skirt the command structure of the unit a bit, and I like to make people laugh.

... and adds a whole new color to the game. He's brilliant.

I spit on Sean K. Reynolds' opinions of anything gaming related.

Style?

I play with abandonment, cautious abandonment, with lots of planning and within a very carefully researched player concept acted upon with a method that should get me nominated for an academy award. Seriously portrayed but with the GM in mind at all times so as to be an asset to the game and those less fortunate.
