I would not want to be on, under, near, or around that technical when they fire that gun - I'd imagine that the...wooden? 2x4? frame that it is sitting on would not take the load stresses very well and things would quickly get dynamic.

simonmark6 07-28-2011 01:58 PM

I've seen a closer video of it firing, although the firing could be simulated. Basically they seem to drive it up and point it at a target, fine aim it with the little adjusting wheels and then everyone gets clear and one man reaches up into the turret and fires it.

Close up the framework looks to be angle iron, but like I said, the video that was supposed to prove it fired could have been rigged. The gun went boom but they could have had a firework up there for all I know.

Yep - look at the shadow - you can see both his feet clear of the weapon.

I thought maybe that the MG has been poorly maintained and he is using his foot on the cocking handle (its on the left side of the receiver on the PKM isn't it?). But you're right atiff, the shadows show that both feet are clear of the weapon.

It may only be an action figure, but it really suits the T2K vibe.

Yes it was.

That's what i tought... is it true that an RPG can punch through one side and blow-up on the inside and the explosion be contained by it's armor, creating a box of deep fried squadies?

In a nutshell, the RPG HEAT round, like any High Explosive Anti-Tank round, exploits a phenomenon called the Monroe Effect to focus a portion of the energy of a chemical explosion into a pencil-thin armor penetrator sometimes called a plasma bolt. The shaped charge that generates the Monroe Effect incorporates an inverted cone, usually copper, surrounded by high explosives inside a casing like the exterior of an RPG round. When the explosive detonates, the inverted cone reverses its orientation, turning from concave (the point facing back towards the main body of the round) to convex (the point facing towards the target). The metal of the cone becomes super-heated and is focused by the Monroe Effect into a pencil-thin penetrator. Some speak of a plasma bolt burning through armor. Technically, this idea is not accurate. The penetrator acts more like a spike driven by a colossal pile driver. Pressure on the order of 100,000 atmospheres cause the penetrator to pierce the armor and liquefy it by sheer kinetic energy as the penetrator pushes forward. When the penetrator reaches the open cavity inside the crew compartment, the crew is exposed to an effect called spalling. The armor liquefied by the penetrator sprays across the interior of the crew compartment. Also, the penetrator becomes less focused and contributes to the spray of very high temperature material moving through the interior spaces of the target vehicle. At the very least, the crew will suffer injuries as a result of spalling, and equipment will be damaged. Spalling or the plasma bolt itself may strike ammunition or fuel, often resulting in what is euphemistically termed a catastrophic kill.

The penetrating power of a given HEAT round versus RHS (rolled homogenous steel) typically equals three times the diameter of the warhead. In cases in which the penetrating power of the HEAT warhead significantly overmatches the armor of the target, the penetrator might actually cross the interior space, penetrate the armor on the other side, and exit the target vehicle. This is a likely result of an RPG HEAT round striking the side armor of an M113. This is not to say that the passengers and crew won’t be KIA or WIA. Spalling will produce numerous injuries. Anyone actually struck by the plasma bolt will be killed or badly wounded. The plasma bolt may strike fuel, ammunition, or explosives inside the crew compartment. It’s unlikely, though, that the penetrator will fail to exit the vehicle, given the enormous penetrating power of an RPG HEAT round vis-à-vis the armor of an M113 or any other APC.

Here's a thought...

Anyone want to put up their hand to take all the pictures from this thread and create an album? Would be a labour of love and require a bit of maintenance (adding further pictures as they were submitted unless there's a way anyone can contribute).

Albums allow comments on the individual pictures without clogging the place with excess chatter. The thumbnails in the albums also make it a LOT easier to find the picture yuo really want.

Well, I don't mind creating an album for you guys. :) Question is A: do we have a spot here in the forums or the site where we can post it, and B: How do you want this arranged? Just one big album, or different sub categories? If you go with subcategories, that'll take longer.

Legbreaker 10-04-2011 05:02 PM

If you go to the "Community" drop down you'll see "Pictures & Albums".
Some have already taken advantage of this under utilised site feature. Some of the pics in this thread may already be in those existing albums so there's not need to repeat them I would think. We also appear to have a number of pics in this thread which have been repeated either by quoting, or unintentionally - take the burning M113 a few posts back for example.

With probably over a thousand pics in here, it's not going to be a quick job, and it will require maintenance from the album "owner" - updates as photos are submitted and removal of duplicates as necessary.
