9th Company

Anyone seen 9th Company yet? Apparently the Russian answer to Platoon and other US big budget Vietnam movies, it's about a unit of Soviet paras doing a rotation in Afghanistan late in their war there (1988). Story doesn't break any new ground in the war movie genre, but isn't bad -- the core characters are followed from induction as conscripts to their deployment.

From a T2K perspective, it shows a lot of great footage of Russian troops on campaign and in the field, with lots of good shots of just about the full complement of Soviet small arms, including some shots of stuff that never turns up in Western films like Soviet grenade launchers and RPGs other than the RPG-7. Some good shots of assorted Soviet armor and soft skin vehicles, as well. Definitely worth checking out.

I picked it up on dvd last week. It's good, a bit "B" but good. worth the cash to buy it imo

Yeah, it did have kind of a B movie feel to it in some ways. Seeing the gear and little details (making home brew in a BMP fuel tank while on patrol was cool) was more interesting than the plot, I thought.

yeah I was loving the AFV's , you never get the real stuff. RPG 18's was a nice thing to see. :)
