Expressions of interest in hosting and administering this forum
Alright gents, it is crunch time. As you are all no doubt aware Kato13 is relinquishing hosting and administration of this forum. I for one can not thank him enough for all his care and hard work. His heart is no longer in the project but he has gone out of his way to pave the way for us as a community to find other options.
The mods and Kato have agreed on a process to select a new admin and hosting arrangement. This thread is step one. From now until the end of May we are officially calling for expressions of interest (willingness really) in taking up the hosting and administration of this forum. This from Kato: Quote:
Ideally the forum should be hosted in US though this isn't a strict requirement. Obviously the new admin would need to have sufficient knowledge and resources to run the forum. I can't really be more specific because, to be honest, I am completely lacking in knowledge in this area. Anyone who is willing and able to take up the admin and hosting of this forum please contact me (or the mods as a group, or any other mod if you don't feel comfortable talking to me) via Private Message and we will arrange further communication through email or whatever. At the end of the month Kato and the mods will review the options received and make a decision on which is the best option. It is likely we will then put the selected option (or a selection of the best options) to a vote of the membership. Several members have already made public expressions of interest in administering the forum. Please do not take this thread to mean that your offers have been rejected (quite the contrary). If you are still interested please indicate so via the process described above. This process has been selected in the interests of fairness, democracy and to give us as many options as possible. Thank you all for your consideration. I, my fellow mods and Kato eagerly await any and all expressions of interest. |
Hello all
If you need help to retrieve some elements from this forum to transfer it to a new one, I'll be happy to help. Altough, I don't know if I can. I could have thought about hosting the forum and, actually, I did (I own several domains, I'm currently working full time on the Internet, have access to enough equipments, run several blogs and a number of websites). However, I know nothing about forum's running and, therefore, checked French legislation on that matter. That would mean take full responsibility for what is said or delaying the validation of any posts (I can't do that). As a result, I'm really sorry but I won't be abble to run for that position. There is only one land of the free currently left in the world and clearly it isn't France. Good luck and let me know.:) |
While I have knowledge on how to administrate a discussion board (I am an administrator on two other game discussion boards) I have no ability to host a discussion board.
So I offer my assistance as an administrator if it is needed by whomever decides to take on the hosting duties. |
Am willing to help in the administrative duties as well.

Regarding "the move"
A computer running the software for this forum, what does it need ?
I myself have a 100MB/100MB full duplex connection and a lot of unused boxes, and basically space to place it, but I don't yet have knowledge of how to administer this. How much space is needed for the whole forum basically ? Just airing it now, since I earlier had 2 linux boxes running here. GP |
I wish I had some technical knowledge, because I think it would be an honor to host this board. It would be expensive, no?
My interest in T2K comes and goes, but my passion stays strong enough to put my money where my mouth is and contribute fundage to whoever picks up the mantle. What would I pay for lifelong access to everything we ever said here, and everything we every will say? $50 sounds about right. I have paypal. I have no idea how much something like this costs to set up or maintain, so I don't know if $50 is a meaningful contribution or not, but it is around what I can afford. Actually looking at my RPG bookcase, I am certain I have spent more money on T2k stuff than any other rpg system. All those ebay binges and years of combing through stacks of books in musty game stores on the road have really added up. Best money I ever spent. $50 more? Hells yes. |
Yes it would help some of the thing like the average bandwidth and other details that would help people decide if they were willing to take up the responsibilities. I myself would consider it, but I am in phase where I am currently looking for work and having to move my family.

Information
Our site falls in the middle ground as far as bandwidth and disk space. Our Monthly Traffic is generally 8-15gb with a spike up to 25gb the month where I created the attachment list. Drive space currently required would be less than 1GB but given growth rates I would think 2GB would be a fair minimum. Current 200 MB for file structure 200 MB for attachments 300 MB for Database |
Have we any volunteer to take things over?

I'll just point out that the 93 Games Studio forum is probably on its last legs. Due to a highly unfavorable ratio of new people to new spambots, Keith's disabled new member registration. It's seeing about one post a week - over the past month, I think this board actually has received more Twilight: 2013 discussion than 93GS' has. My personal ideal would be an evolution of the community that's willing to accept discussion of 2013/Reflex as well as the classic settings and systems. YMMV.

It seems that combining the three versions into the one site has significant merit. While 2013 is a fairly significant diversion from the original, much of the discussions could apply equally to all three.

I'm for all versions: 1.0, 2.X, 2013, and home-brews, perhaps all in separate sections, or something.
I'd be happy to help in anyway I can, but don't have the hardware or space to do any hosting. Which means not a whole lot I can do. But, the offer is there. Well, offer up my time, since I have no life outside of work at anyrate. Added up hours spent online a week and it is actually kinda scary. |
Just how different is 2013 to V1.0 and 2.x? (I've both earlier versions but nothing of 2013).
My understanding is the background is rather different to the earlier two (which were generally the same) and so therefore probably would merit a separate section as here with Morrow Project. For that matter, I can't see any reason why any of the post apocalyptic settings should have a home somewhere in the forum. |
The setting is radically different. The mechanics are, too, with the exception of some limited compatibility in heavy weapon and vehicle traits.

In that case, it would definitely warrant a dedicated section all of it's own.
Although technologically 2013 is about 15 years more advanced than T2k I can certainly see a lot of cross over though in ideas and even equipment. It makes sense for the two to share a common home. |

Thanks for posting the usage statistics, Kato. I'll check with the hosting provider I had in mind and see what that would translate to in monthly cost. I'll let you know if it still looks feasible in relation to what I had proposed earlier. The only monkey wrench in those gears is that I am looking at an upcoming physical relocation in the next couple months. |
