Cultural exceptions in the British Army
 

Hi,

Question for the Brits - what 'cultural exceptions' are permitted for members of the British Army in terms of clothing and ornamentation?

As a specific example that I am interested in, would a moko (Maori facial tattoo) be permitted?

If there is a regimental example of something, it can be used as an excuse; friends who went to Sandhurst had tales of forgetting buttons or cap badges, and avoiding punishment by saying something like "At the Battle of Corunna in 1809, the rearguard had no badges or buttons, so ever since we have marked the anniversary by not wearing badges or buttoning our jackets. Regimental tradition!" The instructors, not being from the same regiment, wouuld not have the time to check.
Facial tattoos would be harder to fit in, but a character with a background in undercover Intelligence or anti-terrorism work could temporarily have such marks, until removal could be arranged- the outbreak of war could have interrupted the removal.
