Krakow ORMO
Hey all, I had a question about the situation with the ORMO. I have the Free City of Krakow module, and it mentions a lot about the ORMO, but I was wondering what they would think about these Americans (and British and Germans as my players would have it) driving around with their HMMWVs and 1/2 Ton Trucks rigged up with M60s and the like?
I mean, it's a 'free city'and all, so I'm sure there's other groups of "adventurers" travelling about with their stuff too, but how would the stalwart protectors of Krakow take these outsiders? |
In my version of Krakow, outside the Old City just about anything goes as long as any firerights aren't protracted or too large. Inside the Old City, only local troops are allowed anything bigger than a sidearm, and vehicles must have special license/permits.

Some form of peace-bond, perhaps? A large amount of cash/valuables deposited with the local constabulary as a guarantee/leverage against any frivolous use of weapons heavier than those used to settle "gentlemen's disputes".
Or perhaps a more physical form of "peace bond", as in a thin but strong chain tightly wound around the cocking handle/charging lever/bolt/trigger and then padlocked. You would be able to unwrap the weapon in a few moments and then load it, but you couldn't just squeeze off a few rounds in anger. |

When my friends and I played YEARS ago, we left the tank outside the city under guard. We never brought her in until we had brokered a deal with the city to buy her. The issue of what kinds of weapons might be allowed never came up, because we assumed that an M60 represented the maximum firepower the ORMO might tolerate. The ref never told us, and we never saw any private parties with heavier weapons inside the secured zone.

With regards to vehicles, I've been to Krakow and some of the streets inside the Old City are quite narrow. It's debatable if anything anything larger than a Humvee could actually be driven inside the Old City - you might be OK with a LAV25 / BTR 70 etc, but I doubt very much if a tank would fit.

A LAV yes: I've seen a LAV rolling around in downtown Frederick Maryland a few months ago. Dunno why it was, but it was. Didn't have any problems with the traffic either.

When our group had business in Krakow, we left the heavy stuff outside the city, but laagered in a village under guard. We just used the Hummer, UAZ, and MTLB to drive into town to conduct our business. And on two occasions when ammo was purchased for the vehicles, we just designated a place outside town for the meet, because everyone was coming to those two events, to guard against a double-cross. The Hummer, btw, did mount a Ma Deuce, and we had no objections from the ORMO about mounting the weapon or using it if necessary.

Driving Large vehciles and heavy weapons I though were covered in the mod?

There are a series of forts around Krakow built in the Austro-Hungarian days. They make perfect places to hole up your heavy gear before visiting Krakow.

If you Google Krakow Forts, plenty of links will come up. I doubt that the GDW boys knew about them otherwise I'd bet they'd have used them either as ORMO outposts or bandit bases. They are perfect hideouts so I'd bet someone's using them...
