OT: Defenders of Wewelsburg

The PCs are planning a raid on the Wewelsberg castle, which is home of occult SS oprratoons (among other uses). I am assuming that due to a certain level of artogance, it doesn't quite have the (non-magical) defenses one might expect. Anything seem to be missing?

Air defenses are not included, as they won't be involved.

NCOs are armed with MP-40's and riflemen with 98k rifles.

PCs and NPCs will total around 50-60.

SS company (205 men)
* HQ platoon (9 men)
* 3 rifle platoons (52 men each)
** HQ squad (4 men)
** 3 rifle squads (12 men each)
*** squad leader
*** assistant squad leader
*** 7 riflemen
*** MG 34 w/ bipod gunner
*** 2 MG 34 ammo bearers/assistants
** heavy weapon section (12 men)
*** 2 MG 34 w/ tripods
*** 1 5cm mortar
* heavy weapon platoon (40 men)
** 6 MG 34 w/ tripods
** 2 8cm mortars
** 2 AT rifle teams
27 todesritter (necromantic zombies)
12 "gargoyles" (Martian bioforms)
2 black unicorns

weswood 06-06-2012 03:00 PM

Who is riding the black unicorns?

simonmark6 06-06-2012 03:10 PM

No Nazi babes in skintight leather catsuits carrying sten guns. I can't believe you left them out! Talk about dropping the ball...

No one, although a couple of SS women in black leather are possible ;)

simonmark6 06-07-2012 02:48 AM

That's fine then. You may carry on...

James Langham 06-07-2012 12:29 PM

What do you need to know, I have been there and may have photos still somewhere?

Depending on the date MG42 and MP44 if late, if early MP18/28 and Zb26 (more likely as you include AT rifle). I have some decent SS Orbays at home - let me know what date you are looking at and I'll see what I can find.

October 1942.

I considered the G.31 semi-auto rifle, but frankly I want the PCs to have some kind of chance, so the bulk of the German soldiers have bolt-action rifles.

Additionally, the majority of the raiding party are 30 Picts n loan from Mabd (they've been fighting trolls under the Grampian Mountains for centuries, so are quite good at stealth, hand-to-hand combat and night fighting).

The PCs are looking at this as a "Doolittle" raid -- not expecting to do much damage, but are expecting to really shake up the Germans by hitting a target they probably consider safe from ground forces.

What kind of weapons are the PCs & NPCs armed with?

The MP18/28 might fit nicely then for NCOs and the ZBs might make nice background colour. Also maybe issue Kar98s not Kar98ks against just to be different but I do recall they were used more for parade grounds.

Will see what I can sort for you over the weekend.

Two PCs have assault rifles (basically E.M.1's chambered for .276 Pedersen). The third will probably use an M-1 carbine, but he's more useful for his magical skills (nothing like fireballs or sleep spells).

The fourth PC has an Atlantean battlecruiser, but he's several light years away so really doesn't count -- and he has a Martian invasion fleet to deal with once he gets back.

The 30 Pictss are armed with spears and daggers.

Lillith is also going to let them borrow 4-6 of her daughters, hideous monsters that fight with fang and claw and are very tough -- but will have getting through any magical wards in the castle (in comes the third PC, the Shinto priest).

There may be a few more NPCs involved, depending on what the PCs can scrounge in the next 24 hours or so.

(one of the PCs has used a BAR and silenced Nagant revolver in the past a bit, so might take one or both of those)

Now if we could find a photographer and a couple of Aryan models, I think we might just be able to acquire the capital necessary to pay the royalties on re-issuing some Twilight: 2000.

I'm sure you'd probably find a few volunteers willing to act as photographer for no charge...

BTW, am I the only one who is totally lost by this thread? SS? Zombies? Picts? Atlantean Battlecruisers and Martian invasion fleets? I'm confused...!

Hey, I did mark it as 'off topic' ;)

It's for my Weird WWII campaign and I thought I might get some help here on the conventional part of the defending force.

LOL...no worries mate, just didn't have a clue what it was all about! When it comes to RPG's I'm only really familiar with T2K.

One quick question: I know the castle is surrounded by a village, but the village is one district in the city of Buren. How close are the other districts to the village? One photo makes it looks like there are a few acres of woods and farmland around thr village (at least large enough for a small raiding force to assemble in).

Nah, as long as you have fun ... Go for it.

This webpage has a photo that may be useful, it's not stated when it was taken but it's black & white so the assumption is that it dates from at least no earlier than the 1950s. There is also a second photo from the early 1940s (based on the uniforms being worn).
Both infer that the rear of the castle was at the time quite isolated from the nearby village.

P.S. Although in German, this website has many images including photos of the floorplan of the castle

From memory there should be plenty to assemble in.

In the first session of the raid, after being teleported into the courtyard, one PC (the ex-Mafia hitman) paid no attention to my description of the scene, so he capped both SS Barbies (he thought they were SS Kens) and was shocked when the two evil unicorns charged him (he missed the 'glowing red eyes' bit). Fortunately, the other PC and two NPCs saved his ***.

He radioed in for a 3rd PC (and his NPC daughter) to be teleported in, along with 30 Pict warriors. As they start entering the castle, PC #1 noticed a gargoyle peering down from atop the wall ...
