Just scored a copy of "Last Battle" online!

Hey all,

Noble Knight Games eMailed me this morning and I am now the proud owner of the wargame "Last Battle:Twilight:2000", in an unpunched condition. Does anyone know much about this wargame? Is it anything like GDW's "First Battle" series? I mostly bought it to fit into my Twilight:2000 collection, but should I punch it and play it?

I'm hoping it'll be here Monday!

Yes, it's pretty much the same system as "First Battle." I have it, but I only use the counters for my T2k games.

I would scan them, make digital copies, print and cut out counters from the digital copies. That way the set stays unpunched.

Exactly! But after copying the hell out of the counters - play it, man!
Never understood gamers which collect stuff in "the original wrapping" - thats unholy!

A good game MUST be played! If your a T2k-Gamer, you must use your LB-counters!
Congratulations to your new game. I am totally jealous, cause i dont have copy!
I hate you !!!:D

Hey Guys,

Now why didn't *I* think of that? :D I'd get to eat my cake and have it too!

Thanks, Guys!

So DCausey, is it a reprint or an original? Personally I'd be happy with either but you'd think an original in good condition would be pretty rare.

It's an original 1989(?) print. They told me the box is a bit worn, but the contents are near-mint. I *think* the set is pretty rare, but I'm not sure.

*Yawn*
Just the one box? I have two here both in very good condition. :p
Two copies of Twilight Encounters too.

Left overs from trading old games and books back in the days before ebay put me out of business. :(

It's a good find though, don't let it gather dust on the shelf too long before you play it!

I have a good condition Twilight Encounters but I think my Last Battle box is long gone. Care to do a deal, Leg? :D

Sometimes you get lucky - I got Going Home, the RDF, Krakow and the US Army Vehicle Guide at a collectible store for 3 dollars a piece in near mint condition - not bad considering the prices I have seen for them on e-bay and the like.

DCausey 10-05-2012 09:59 AM

Leg, I will definitely be playing it! :)

Olefin, those are great prices! I paid $25 for my mint RDF Sourcebook! I really love it, tho.

What does The Last Battle entail? Is it just a wargame with T2k vehicles scarcity rules or are there some key T2k elements in it beyond that?

Slappy 10-09-2012 08:20 AM

I think I have a copy of this. It is a small unit infantry and vehicle game. What I remember though is that it is really small scale and quite abstract. Units are 4-5 men, all vehicles individual. The hexes are like 2.5 inches across, so not much range at all. My recollection is that it may help resolving T2K encounters, but not much fun as a stand alone wargame. If I were doing a bigger game I think I would repurpose the Team Yankee board game. If I were doing the usual PC group, I'd just pen and paper it.

Yeah -- it works best for small unit actions that are just a bit too large to resolve at the role playing game level. Sort of an expansion of the idea of the macro-level combat rules GDW included in Ruins of Warsaw. Haven't played it in years, but recall it being a pretty fun beer and pretzels kind of game. Never used it to resolve T2K encounters, just as a stand alone system for evening's game play sort of stuff.

I used it for small, medium, and even some large-scale engagements. I used the Last Battle maps, Squad Leader maps, Firefight maps, Car Wars maps, and just about anything I could find that was useable -- it's interesting to play on an Ogre/GEV map that has actual craters!

For counters, I sometimes used Last Battle counters or some from other games, but I often hand-drew counters or Xeroxed Squad Leader counters and modified them. Close, tedious, intensive work I'm no longer capable of.

I once had the rules set expanded to include just about every weapon and vehicle in the game or that I had done up stats for (at the time), but I haven't seen them in decades. Don't know what happened to them, or how I came up with the numbers.:(
