They travel between mainland Australia and Tasmania (where I am) daily carrying a huge amount of cargo and passengers to and from here.
The lower decks are big enough to easily accomodate a large number of trucks and heavy equipment, some of which would rival tanks for weight and are certainly a lot bigger.
While built a little too late for T2K (1998 in Finland) they are a useful example I would think.
Baltic sea is crossed by several cruiseferry lines. One ship can take more than 2000 passengers. Car deck is size is something like 1000 lanemeters.
