There was in fact a rather interesting weapon designed by the British during WWII called the De Lisle carbine. It was a suppressed bolt-action rifle that fired .45ACP ammunition, judged to be ideal for the weapon for the reasons you described.
I heard it was made in only limited numbers (about 129 or so?), but apparently there were rumors that since it was such a successful design that it was still being used long after WWII.
