Oh, they got even better than that...the BMP's armor is made of magnesium alloy...with the fuel tanks installed in the REAR DOORS! 
The term "pot roast" comes to mind for any poor bastards stuck in the things if/when they get lit up...not to mention it looks pretty damn cramped in there to begin with.
