Your vehicles look stunning! You have to do a more "twilightian" model.

The Burlap: Tissue paper and diluted PVA glue does the job. I paint the burlap before glueing the helmet to the model.
And for the rest: It's a question of practice and a lot of tips and ideas from hobby magazines, unfortunately all in German. There is an excellent book on miniature painting and building by Bill Horan. I've lended it to a friend, so I have no title or ISBN and so forth, but I'll send you the info, when I've talked to him.
