Damn, Glenn Cook is one of my favoritest authors ever. Didn't realize I was channeling... Ed doesn't make a good Croaker though.
If you haven't picked up his other books, Night Shade Publishing has reprinted his
Dread Empire, Dark War, Starfishers, and my favorite
The Dragon Never Sleeps among others.
