True, but some of the smaller cable networks can produce niche shows that do quite well in the ratings- or at least well enough not to get cancelled after six episodes. AMC's got Mad Men and Breaking Bad and Walking Dead. FX has Sons of Anarchy. These aren't necessarily low-budget shows either. The major networks must need massive advertising revenues to stay afloat. Maybe they literally can't afford to be patient. I don't know.
