I remember reading an article in the early 80s about potential Soviet threats to satellites in geosynchronous orbit; unfortunately I cannot remember the source.
The essence was a rocket launched which would slingshot around the moon, then enter the geosynchronous orbit altitude in the opposite direction to geosynchronous orbit. When it exploded, instead of using ball-bearings, it would release pellets of expanded polystyrene.
Given the relative velocities, these pellets would be just as effective as ball-bearings in destroying satellites. However, after a short time, these pellets would evaporate, making the geo orbits available for future use.
