I ride a motorbike every day so I'm all too aware of the poor driving habits of Perth's drivers.

The shark attack victim, Greg Pickering, is a professional abalone diver so for him shark attacks are an occupational hazard. Unfortunately Australian waters are home to two of the larger and more aggressive species - the great white shark and the bronze whaler. It was a bronze whaler that had a bit of a nibble on his leg in 2004 so he's in the rare position of being able to compare and contrast the bites of both species (the latest attack was by a great white shark).

The most impressive part of the whole story (perhaps equal to the fact that he even got out of the water alive) was that his mates managed to stop him from bleeding to death while they brought him to shore and drove dozens of kilometres to meet the paramedics.

The state government here has a truly stupid policy of trying to catch and kill any shark that attacks a human. The authorities responsible for carrying out the policy freely admit that just finding any shark of the right species and size is difficult, let alone being in any way certain that any shark they catch is the right one. So basically it's just reprisal killings, and let's face it, that doesn't really work with sharks.

Great whites are a protected species and they're a top predator so killing them is ignorant and harmful to the environment. As we all know, politicians never let logic and good science get in the way of getting a few extra votes from the pathologically ignorant.
