When I joined the 81st Bde we still had several people who were in when it was part of the 9th, and most of our active duty evaluators were also former 9th. Talking with them it was not specific Middle East but desert that being one of the reasons they hooked them up with WAARNG. Most people think that WA is all green forest but a large chunk of it is desert. Now this is all second hand to me.
