Myself, I'd put it in the north or northwest, meaning it crossed Germany to join the Third German Army, but that it was available for use-- not holding the line against the Pact in the east or the south.
In college, I remember I ran an NPC, a German recon NCO with a wife and daughter in Bremen (or was it Hannover?). At least one of the players made it a personal goal to get him back home.
Running a group of left-behinds, trying to pick up the fate of the 5th Division would be a very interesting idea-- they would have to move fast, if they hope to beat Omega.

Actually I could see several ways you could do a search party in a campaign
Pre-Omega - it could be run either as part of a Going Home scenario - i.e. player characters run into a party composed of relatives and now healed up soldiers who werent at Kalisz searching for their buddies/families - could even be how they find out about Omega
Post Omega - could be run as part of a return to Europe scenario where either the search party is the player characters or the player characters again run into relatives and soldiers who refused to be evacuated - either looking to find out what happened and possibly bring them back to Germany or in connection with a second Omega - this one being sent from the RDF to pick up any stragglers or to try to get out the rest of the units that were cut off but still intact in Poland and werent evac'd during Omega
