For example I have seen USMC troops who lead a fire team as a Lance Corporal (E-3) and a Squad at E-5. I have worked with USAF troops who were in charge of a group (not sure what it was called) about squad size at Tech Sergeant (E-7).
I would say that best rank IMO is SSG (E-6) you are in charge of a squad/tank but not in charge of the paperwork.

Tech Sergeant is E-6. Master Sergeant is E-7 (to the zoomies).
I actually had my first team leader assignment at E-3 (PFC in the Army). I got promoted to E-4 soon after that, and then they made me a Corporal and a Squad Leader. Took me a while to get E-5 after that, because I PCSed in the middle of the promotion process (not something I recommend to anyone, though it worked out.)
Corporal sucks in a way, because you really
are an NCO, but you don't really have any status or rank.
