As far as I can tell from a quick check, the primary difference between the two is a few ounces of weight and different cyclic rates. They look pretty similar:

The MK48 is actually a new generation of "hybrid Machinegun." It can use 80% of the parts from the M240B or the M249 SAW. By taking the bolt, barrel, and feed tray from an M249; You can convert to 5.56mmN caliber from 7.62mmN. This is essentially a "field expedient" conversion that can be done with minimal tools. In fact, SF soldiers using the MK48 were equipped with 5.56mmN conversion kits.
